National Bullying Prevention Month (NBPM) is an important time to elevate the conversation about addressing and preventing bullying of K-12 children and youth.
Bullying is the aggressive use of power, targeting another person or group of people with repeated, unwanted words or action, hurting them emotionally or physically. Bullying impacts the education, health, and safety of K-12 youth.
“The negative effects of bullying can last a lifetime,” said Julie Hertzog, director of PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center. “Calling out bullying behavior and supporting those who are bullied can make a big difference for those who experience bullying.”
National Bullying Prevention Month is an opportunity to:
Offer information and education to students, with steps to address and prevent bullying
Provide a platform to host school and community events
Share bullying prevention information through news media, social media, videos, and print publications
Speak with educators about their role in bullying prevention
Promote dialogue between educators, parents, and students on their roles in addressing and preventing bullying
Invite organizations to share information about their bullying prevention resources
Inspire everyone to promote kindness, acceptance, and inclusion to help prevent bullying

New Oklahoma Mental Health Legislation became effective July 1, 2022. We know that there are many questions regarding this new legislation and the implementation of new policies and procedures in your schools. In response the Division of School Based Mental Health within the office of Student Support has created a guidance document aligned to the recently released red book mental health legislation components.
The Oklahoma State Department of Education in partnership with the Oklahoma Regents of Higher Education has approved Aviation Technology (3580) to count as a core credit for Computer Technology for Oklahoma’s Promise and college admissions. Districts currently offering Aviation courses that include instruction in engineering and/or technology in aviation can utilize the new Aviation Technology (3580) course code for courses and count the courses as meeting computer technology requirements for both the College Preparatory/Work Ready and CORE Curriculum graduation requirements. Please review the Curriculum Checklists for specific graduation requirements of each pathway.
Additionally, Psychology (5641) and Sociology (5720) are eligible to count as the additional unit for the College Preparatory/Work Ready Curriculum requirements.
In-State Student Transfers: Many students complete ICAP on separate tools before transferring to another district. As the receiving district it is your responsibility to make sure a student has access to ICAP planning process. If a student transfers to your district with ICAP progress on another tool, simply add the following statement in the “Notes” section of their ICAP portfolio.
“This student has completed the XXXX – XXXX AY ICAP requirement at XXXX High School using the (OkCollege Start, OKCareerGuide, Naviance, Other) online tool.”
Gaps In ICAP Completion: Some districts may encounter students with gaps in ICAP plans. To make sure students get the best from the ICAP experience, schools can design a ICAP recovery plan for students.
The ICAP Recovery Guide has been created as a resource for students that are not currently on track to complete ICAP requirements before graduation. This guide will allow you to engage students to complete the necessary activities and ensure that all ICAP requirements are met in accordance with the Oklahoma State Department of Education graduation mandates. You can reach the College and Career Readiness Office at 405-522-1918

Dear School Counselors: We need five minutes of your time to help us disseminate this new opportunity to improve lives of Oklahoma County youth. Through a new Community Based Prevention Services Grant funded through the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, C.A.R.E. Consulting Group is building a youth leadership coalition in Oklahoma County called the Monster Soup Society!
Through 9/30/22 we are accepting applications from youth to build a middle school coalition as well as a separate high school coalition of youth community advocates addressing youth alcohol and marijuana use, youth emotional well-being and other public health priorities.
If you know a young person between the ages of 11-18 who might be interested, please nominate them and encourage them to apply by forwarding a link to the application. We are looking for a diverse group of traditional and non-traditional leaders – extroverts and introverts! If each school site would nominate at least 3 youth, we can get a broad representation of youth across our county.
Youth participation can count toward community service hours, can boost college and job applications, and will build lifelong skills. Thank you for all you do for Oklahoma’s children; we hope this project will augment your excellent work.
Heather Ariyeh, Monster Soup Society Project Director Tiffani Henry, Monster Soup Society Project Manager
