The mission of the Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities Agency is to ensure individuals with disabilities achieve quality employment, independence and disability determination outcomes.

What's Inside:

OOD Releases 2015 Vocational Rehabilitation CSNA Report

The 2015 Vocational Rehabilitation Comprehensive Statewide Needs Assessment (CSNA) is a massive data collection and analysis project.  It is designed to serve as a guide for assessing the progress and projected service needs for Ohioans that could benefit from vocational rehabilitation (VR) services.  Led by Deputy Director Raivo Murnieks, the 2015 CSNA was produced by OOD’s Division of Performance and Innovation, in conjunction with Kent State University’s supporting analysis of youth and students with disabilities.

This CSNA not only followed the methodologies developed as part of the 2012 CSNA, but further analyzed specific needs of the working-age population and youth that could benefit from VR services.  This report also highlights the progress made from the 2012 CSNA recommendations and provides nine new data driven recommendations.

The entire CSNA is available on OOD’s main internet page and via the following links:

National Disability Employment Awareness Month

NDEAM 2015

OOD is proud to support National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM).  Held each October, NDEAM aims to educate about disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of America's workers with disabilities.  The theme this year — which marks 70 years since the first NDEAM observance — is "My Disability is One Part of Who I Am."

Throughout the month of October, OOD will be engaging in a variety of activities to educate Ohioans about disability employment issues and the role they play in fostering a disability-friendly work culture.  This will include a second annual series of regional job fairs and our business recognition awards, The Opportunity Awards, as well as the sharing of information and resources through social media and here in the Weekly Focus.

For real-time news and information about NDEAM, and other issues related to employment and individuals with disabilities, be sure to follow us on Twitter and “Like” us on Facebook.

Cleveland Sight Center Visit

KLM Flat Tire

I was pleased to visit the Cleveland Sight Center on Tuesday with OOD Commission Chair Jacqui Romer-Sensky and Commission Vice-Chair Jack Licate.  We had a great conversation about how we can better engage and collaborate with this important resource in Northeast Ohio.

We also enjoyed speaking with Kim Mitchell, an accountant examiner in the Cleveland office, who is retiring.  Best of luck, Kim!

The down side of travel is the picture to the right, sustained on the way back from Cleveland on Tuesday.  With job fairs, business recognition events and regular staff travel, October will be a busy month. Wishing OOD staff, and all of you, safe travels.

Consumer Advisory Committee

Raivo CAC 09192015

On Saturday, September 19th, members of the Consumer Advisory Committee (CAC) met at OOD.  Raivo Murnieks, deputy director, Performance and Innovation, presented information on the 2015 Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) Comprehensive Statewide Needs Assessment.  Commission Chair Jacqui Romer-Sensky thanked the CAC members for participating in the Commissioners' Retreat and the Mentoring Event at the Youth Leadership Forum.

The CAC advises OOD on its vocational rehabilitation programs.  This volunteer body is comprised of people who have successfully found or kept a job with the help of OOD.  CAC members serve for three year terms providing an important service to both OOD and Ohioans with disabilities.

If you are interested in becoming a CAC member, please visit the OOD website http://www.ood.ohio.gov/About-Us/Consumer-Advisory-Committee  or contact Shirley Marchi by way of phone at 614-438-1477 or e-mail at shirley.marchi@ood.ohio.gov
