Columbus Faith Leaders:

I write to invite you to join me and Columbus City Councilmember Nancy Day-Achauer for a crucial discussion regarding Zone In — a proposal to modernize Columbus’ zoning code for the first time in more than 70 years. Proposed changes are not merely bureaucratic adjustments, but an essential step toward guiding a more prosperous future for our residents and our community.

Cities are always changing, and Columbus is changing quicker than most. It is imperative that we, as community leaders, come together to understand how we can guide the growth that is happening to make sure that everyone benefits, instead of letting it widen divides.

Through this proposed change, we aim to modernize our zoning regulations to reflect our diverse community's evolving needs, values and aspirations. We want to support sustainable growth by improving housing affordability, preventing displacement of residents from their neighborhoods, growing transit options and fostering the development of job centers that will benefit all residents.

Moreover, we recognize the historical injustices perpetuated by past urban development policies, which have led to racial and economic segregation in specific neighborhoods. We aspire to undo this harm through thoughtful investment and deliberate action and create more equitable opportunities for all Columbus residents.

As faith leaders, you serve as trusted voices within our community, profoundly understanding your congregants’ and neighborhoods’ hopes, concerns and needs. Your insights and perspectives will enrich our dialogue and help ensure that the zoning code update genuinely benefits all Columbus residents.

Councilmember Day-Achauer and I are hosting two faith leader conversations, and you may choose the time that suits your schedule best. Ample opportunities for questions, discussion and collaboration will be provided.
