Dear Climate Smart Community Leader,

The evidence of significant climate change in New York State is mounting. How can communities work with place-based institutions such as colleges and universities as well as local governments to meet this growing challenge? This webinar "Mobilizing Regional Climate Action" will demonstrate two such examples.

Tompkins County Climate Protection Initiative (www.tccpi.org) is an award-winning coalition of community leaders from the education, business, local government, youth, and nonprofit sectors that provides a place to meet and network around climate and energy issues. Webinar participants will learn about the development of TCCPI and how, building on the climate action commitments made by Cornell University, Ithaca College, Tompkins Cortland Community College, Tompkins County, the City of Ithaca, and other local municipalities, it seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, foster a more climate resilient community, and accelerate the transition to a clean energy economy. TCCPI’s flagship program, the Ithaca 2030 District will be examined, as will be the goals and benefits of this new effort to increase the energy and water performance of commercial buildings in the City of Ithaca.

Non-profit Sustainable Westchester combines two organizations that have each demonstrated the strength of inter-municipal collaboration on sustainability issues in Westchester County: the Northern Westchester Energy Action Consortium (NWEAC.org); and the Southern Westchester Energy Action Consortium (SWEAC.org).  This webinar will describe the origins of Sustainable Westchester and how it now helps participating municipalities build healthier, vibrant and more sustainable communities through energy efficiency and related programs and policies.

This webinar will kick off with an overview and description of NYSDEC’s Environmental Excellence Awards and how interested communities can receive statewide recognition for their sustainability projects.  Further information on this program is available at http://www.dec.ny.gov/public/945.html .
