Summary of What's New:

  • New Lake Ontario Ecosystem Assessment Webpage: DEC has developed a new webpage with information about the Lake Ontario Cooperative Science and Monitoring Initiative (CSMI). The webpage has preliminary information about the 2013 CSMI assessment of Lake Ontario and a link to photographs from the 2013 assessment.

U.S. and Canadian organizations assess one of the Great Lakes each year as part of the Cooperative Science and Monitoring Initiative. CSMI assessments took place in Lake Ontario in 2003, 2008 and 2013.

  • Update on NYC Combined Sewer Overflow Consent Order: In June 2013, as required by the 2012 Consent Order with DEC, the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) submitted a Long-Term Control Plan for combined sewer overflows (CSO) that discharge to Little Neck Bay and Alley Creek in Queens.

In December 2013, DEC disapproved the Long-Term Control Plan. In February 2014, DEP filed a lawsuit challenging DEC's decision.

The 2012 Consent Order between DEC and DEP, DEC's decision on the Little Neck Bay/Alley Creek Long-Term Control Plan and related documents are available on DEC's New York City CSO webpage
