Draft General Permits for Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation Available for Public CommentTwo general permits for Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) are available for public review and comment through February 7, 2016. These draft general permits describe the technical programs needed to reduce the potential for water pollution from CAFOs. The two general permits have been in place for many years, but they must be renewed every five years to make sure they fulfill the requirements of state and federal laws, as well as respond to concerns from stakeholders. The draft permits also clarify the definitions of certain terms. In New York, CAFOs generally are farms that house 300 or more dairy cows, with associated livestock operations. There are over 500 CAFOs in the state. Happy Holidays from the Division of Water! We will resume the full MakingWaves email notices in the New Year. In the meantime, visit the Division of Water webpage (http://www.dec.ny.gov/about/661.html) to read recent news from the Division. |
