Bernalillo County will revert to the ban on single-use plastic bags and polystyrene containers within the unincorporated areas of the county, outside the city limits of Albuquerque, on July 1. Bernalillo County Manager Julie Morgas Baca is rescinding the order she implemented last summer allowing businesses to use the bags during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The single-use bags are most frequently used by restaurants and retail establishments and their use was permitted to cut down on the possible spread of the coronavirus.
A single-use plastic carryout bag is defined as a plastic bag provided at the check stand, cash register, point of sale, or other point of departure for the purpose of transporting food or merchandise out of the establishment. A single-use polystyrene container, for purposes of this ordinance, is defined as a disposable food service container designed for one time use and made from polystyrene foam. A disposable food service container includes service ware for take-out foods, packaged meat, bakery products, and leftovers from partially consumed meals prepared by food vendors.
As with the initial implementation of the single-use plastic bag and container ordinance, business owners will be allowed to use any containers and bags they currently have in stock.
Bernalillo County intends to work closely with county business owners to ensure a smooth transition while offering counseling on any possible violations.

16-18 year old applicants eligible for hire
Bernalillo County will receive approximately $1 million from the New Mexico Public Education Department to administer a summer internship program for high school aged youth ages 16-18 interested in exposure to a variety of professions from diverse employers and organizations throughout the city of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County.
The internship program is designed to provide real‐world experiences that expand youth application of academic, technical and employability skills in a work setting.
The county has set the goal to hire in June up to a maximum of 500 student interns to work 20 hours a week for six weeks, beginning in early July. Bernalillo County also intends to employ up to 34 part-time adult coordinators who will oversee intern placement in positions that complement the student’s interest and skills.
To qualify, interns will need to be 16 to 18 years old and be residents of Bernalillo County. The program will be open to any youth who fits the high school age requirement, including spring-summer 2021 graduates. Interns will be paid $12 an hour. Coordinators will be paid $25 an hour.
Upon being hired, interns will need to sign an internship agreement and successfully complete orientation before being placed. Interns will be required to participate in weekly employability training.

Residents must live outside city limits to qualify for county help
Bernalillo County is now accepting online applications for utility and rental assistance through the Bernalillo County Relief of Emergency Needs for Tenants (RENT) assistance program. Paper applications are also being accepted.
The RENT program makes available $5 million to assist households that are unable to pay rent and utilities due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The funds are provided directly to states, U.S. territories, local governments, and Native American tribes.
The grant, made available to Bernalillo County by the United States Treasury, has been earmarked for qualifying renters outside the city limits of Albuquerque, but within the county.
