It has been a two-year process in getting BCFD’s new ladder truck 38 built and officially placed into service. This unit will serve the community in the South Valley at Station 38 off of Rio Bravo and Prince. Last year Station 38 crews responded to 3,196 calls for service.
Ladder truck 38 was funded through the public safety tax that allocates $1.4 million a year for fleet purchases. This unit was funded in Bernalillo County’s fiscal year 2019. Total cost was $1.2 million to include all the firefighting equipment that is stocked on the unit. Over 80 specialty items were purchased for this apparatus so BCFD firefighters can do their job safely and efficiently. Some critical equipment included in the cost were vehicle extrication equipment, rescue jacks, fire hose, nozzles, chain saws, and forcible entry tools.
New ladder truck 38 has a 105 foot ladder stick which is 30 feet longer than the previous unit. It also has a 500-gallon water tank with a 2,000 GPM pump; an upgraded foam system that can be discharged at the tip of the ladder through the waterway system; something the previous unit could not accommodate. The cab configuration was built with a larger compartment design for a more conducive working space inside the cab and to hold emergency medical services equipment. Ladder truck 38 was built to stay in compliance with the “clean cab” initiative that was launched three years ago, keeping firefighters dirty contaminated gear out of the cab.

Lot to become downtown parking
Crews have begun the months-long task of demolishing the old Regional Correctional Center at Fifth and Roma.
Crews are currently working inside the building to remove old fixtures and other items that can either be recycled or, for safety reasons, should be removed before the building is demolished. The removal of the structure will utilize a controlled, non-explosive process.
Removal of the building was awarded to Guzman Construction Solutions, LLC in January.
The decision to raze the building was based on Bernalillo County Fleet and Facilities Department evaluations, the costs of renovation, updates to building systems, and repurposing of the facility were not feasible due to the building’s age and condition.
Once the building is removed, the lot will be leveled and approximately 150 parking spaces will be created and used for county fleet vehicles until such a time that a higher and better use for vacant land in the urban core is a viable option.
Demolition and creation of the parking area is expected to take roughly 10 months at a cost of about $2.4 million.

Residents must live outside city limits to qualify for county help
Bernalillo County is now accepting online applications for utility and rental assistance through the Bernalillo County Relief of Emergency Needs for Tenants (RENT) assistance program. Paper applications are also being accepted.
The RENT program makes available $5 million to assist households that are unable to pay rent and utilities due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The funds are provided directly to states, U.S. territories, local governments, and Native American tribes.
The grant, made available to Bernalillo County by the United States Treasury, has been earmarked for qualifying renters outside the city limits of Albuquerque, but within the county. Applicants within the city must apply to the City of Albuquerque’s rental assistance program. Applicants can verify if they are located outside of the city of Albuquerque before applying by using the provided locator Map. Please click here for a short instructional video on how to use the map.

Center to provide shelter for homeless
|
County commissioners passed a resolution providing $1 million from the county’s general fund to support the City of Albuquerque’s Gateway Center which will provide temporary shelter for those experiencing homelessness.
The county will sell $1 million in general obligation public housing bonds to repay the money allocated from the general operating money.
The city will acquire the building and maintain the facility.
In addition to the temporary shelter provided by the city’s Gateway Center, the county offers counseling and mental care through its Behavioral Health Services located on Zuni, SE.
Additionally, the county offers temporary housing accommodations for those displaced by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The county now also offers transitional housing through the recently opened Tiny Home Village. The village offers temporary housing for those experiencing homelessness and emphasizes the development of personal skills and assistance to a path of long-term community contribution.
