Central Nebraska Veterans' Home
receives notification of federal funds

Lincoln – John Hilgert, Director of the Department of Health and Human Services’ Division of Veterans’ Homes today announced Nebraska has been notified it will receive federal funding for the new Central Nebraska Veterans' Home in Kearney.

“This is wonderful news,” said Hilgert. “We expected to receive funding in this round and appreciate the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ recognition that our veterans deserve a new home.”

Kearney was announced as the location of the new Central Nebraska Veterans’ Home in July 2013, following a competitive process.

Hilgert announced this past June that a contract had been signed with Wilkins Hinrichs Stober Architects of Kearney to begin design work on the project.

“It was very important for us to start the design work necessary to complete the next step in the grant process,” Hilgert said.  “The design work is complete so with this announcement we are fully underway.”

Hilgert said the USDVA has over $105 million in available funds for approved priority projects, which includes Nebraska.  Nebraska will receive partial funding this year with additional funds allotted in future years.

“I know I speak for every Nebraskan when I say how very proud we are of our military personnel and our veterans; they are our heroes,” said Hilgert. “This is for them, and I look forward to each and every milestone until the new Veterans’ Home is completed.”
