John Boyette, Jr., Interim Director, Public Affairs Prepared by: Stephanie Currier, Planning and Development For more information: Dhanya Sandeep, Urban Planner, Urban Design Center, 919-996-2659 April 23, 2015 Urban Design Center to Host Southern Gateway Workshop on May 7 The City of Raleigh Urban Design Center, in collaboration with the project consultant team, will host a workshop to discuss the future of the South Saunders and South Wilmington Street corridors, also known as the Southern Gateway to Raleigh. The Workshop will be conducted on Thursday, May 7, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in rooms 1425 and 1427 of the Wake Tech Public Safety Campus, 321 Chapanoke Road. In March the Urban Design Center began the second phase of the Southern Gateway Corridor Study, by engaging community members and stakeholders in a series of community information sessions. The sessions are designed to generate a better understanding of the issues and a vision for improving the South Saunders and South Wilmington Street corridors. The May 7 workshop is an opportunity for attendees to discuss the results of preliminary analysis and participate in guided discussions around key topics, including transportation, image and character, pedestrian and bicycle connections, neighborhood preservation and development, and economic development. The goals of this workshop include crafting design principles, creating a design framework, and identifying priorities for detailed exploration later this summer.
