Council Member's Message

The arrival of spring kicks off a season of celebration for the First Ward. First up is the Holland neighborhood's Hotdish Revolution, an 11-year old community culinary celebration that just keeps getting bigger and tastier. This year's Revolution will be Sunday, April 12, at the St. Maron's Cedars Hall and will again feature celebrity judges, local beer flights, outrageous jello creations and all the hotdish you can handle.

Next up is the Audubon Park neighborhood's annual Spring WingDing on Saturday, May 2. Set in lovely Audubon Park, this festival celebrates the environment and the great outdoors. Educational nature presentations from the Audubon Society, 4-H and Mississippi Watershed Management Organization are staples of the event, which also includes an arts-and-crafts show and wing contest. For further information, visit http://audubonneighborhood.org/.

Art-A-Whirl, the signature event of the Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association, then launches on Friday, May 15 and continues through Sunday, May 17. What better way to show off the Best Arts District in the Nation than with the largest open studio tour in the nation! Art-A-Whirl features more than 500 artists working in more than 20 different mediums and includes demonstrations, live performances and large scale exhibitions. There are also opportunities to get involved; click HERE to learn more about volunteering at Art-A-Whirl.

These community celebrations are more than a wonderful way to celebrate the end of winter. Each in its own unique way capitalizes on some of Ward One's richest elements, from its unique cultural diversity to its burgeoning and vital arts community and its parks and green spaces. I hope you'll take some time this spring to participate in one or more of these celebrations, meet your neighbors and learn more about our great community.
