Council Member's Message

Early this March I and several Eastside business people and organization leaders began working with an initiative led by a coalition of regional partners that could further advance economic development in Northeast Minneapolis and allow our community to play a role in increasing the economic momentum of our region.

Strong regional economic development relies on the strength and health of our core cities. To that end, Minneapolis and Saint Paul are working with Greater MSP, our regional economic development partner, to develop economic competiveness and job growth strategies that will have immediate short and medium-term impact on job creation in our two cities. TIP Strategies, an economic strategy consulting firm, has been engaged to jumpstart this process.

Four focus areas have been selected for intensive study, two each in Minneapolis and St. Paul. In our city, North Minneapolis will be studied as a “market challenge area”. Northeast Minneapolis was chosen as a “character area”, a community where there is market interest and unique business activity that can be studied for current positive trends that other areas can learn from and for further opportunities that can be advanced and developed in under-utilized areas. Once strategies have been developed, it’s hoped that the results will be replicable in other parts of Minneapolis and St. Paul.

In addition to the focus groups they have have been conducting, TIP Strategies has been gathering statistical data and in-depth information since the beginning of the year. In coming months they will focus on identifying implementable action plans for business retention and recruitment.

It’s gratifying, but not surprising, that Northeast has been recognized as an area with both significant economic development momentum and strong potential for increased job creation. The fact that Northeast was selected as one of the sub-markets for closer study speaks to our community’s deep cultural and community resources, as well as our economic vitality, business diversification and resilience. I am excited about the potential for developing a set of pragmatic tools and strategies that will support and enhance our community’s economic development future.
