State and Local Working Families Policies:  A Discussion Featuring House Leader Paul Thissen, State of MN Health Department Legislative Director Melissa Finnegan and Council Member Elizabeth Glidden

Please join Elizabeth as she welcomes special guest House Leader Paul Thissen for a discussion of State and Local Working Families Policies, and State of MN Health Department Legislative Director Melissa Finnegan for a presentation on their research study, “White Paper on Paid Leave and Health.”

At the State, legislative leaders approved a minimum wage increase after much debate in 2014 and have introduced bills on many workplace policies including paid family leave, paid sick leave, and fair scheduling.

In Minneapolis, city leaders have expressed support for earned sick and safe (paid sick) and fair scheduling ordinances and are hosting conversations about these policies throughout the city.  You can see details on the Minneapolis draft policies here and send in your comments.

Join us for a discussion of working families policies and policy gaps at the national, state and local level.  Learn more about Minneapolis' policy proposals and how to share your input.  We look forward to seeing you!

Update: Working Families Agenda

city hall

Council Member Glidden and her City Council colleagues are working with staff to develop policy proposals in the areas of earned safe and sick (paid sick time) and fair scheduling, as well as addressing wage theft through effective enforcement mechanisms and partnership with state and federal agencies that enforce existing wage and hour laws.  The Council has requested staff to present proposed ordinances in these areas by the end of 2015.

We are seeking input on draft policy proposals for earned safe and sick time through meetings with businesses, workers, and community members.  You can view the draft policy proposals here. Comments can be summited to workingfamilies@minneapolismn.gov through October 16, 2015.
