Council Member's Message

The Mississippi River, which is Ward One's finest natural landscape feature, has become much more accessible thanks to the work of the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization (MWMO). One of their primary goals in choosing to locate their new headquarters on the bank of the river was to create a landscape that both served as a model for responsible water resource stewardship and also welcomed the public to engage and collaborate in that stewardship. That goal comes to fruition with MWMO's Stormwater Park & Learning Center Grand Opening on Saturday, September 19.

Stormwater Park is a stormwater management demonstration area in MWMO's own backyard. They have installed native prairie landscaping which is intended to evolve over the next three to five years as it becomes established with deep-rooted plants that will stabilize the surface soils. The site also features bio-retention ponds, rain gardens and an experimentation station that tests water run-off from the parking lot as it passes through three different types of soil to compare retention and pollutant reduction. Stormwater Park also improves community access to the river with open views of the water and accessible sidewalks down to the shoreline.

The celebration on Saturday will also highlight MWMO's Learning Center in their headquarters building, with tours, digital displays and demonstrations. This is a great opportunity to see some of the water-related art works MWMO has acquired, as well as view the Minneapolis Satellite Reef crochet coral exhibit, featuring the work of many community members.

I have been very pleased and proud to see the evolution of MWMO's ambitious headquarters complex since they opened the doors in 2012 and this latest development offers tremendous educational and aesthetic value to the community at large. I sincerely hope you will join us in celebrating Stormwater Park and the Learning Center at 2522 Marshall Street NE, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 19.
