Council Member's Message

This summer has been a busy one for Ward One. Central Avenue continues to be a hotbed of enhancement as the new Walgreens and Central Clinic construction are joined by Eastside Food Co-op's launch of its expansion. See the article below for more information about the demolition of the Love Lines building and the plans for a larger store that will better meet the needs of the community.

Edison High School is also a site for backhoes and cranes as the next phase of the Green Campus sustainability project launches. Check out the short film that documents the previous phase's work on the athletic field at https://vimeo.com/129727844 and see the story below for more information about what the future of the campus holds.

Another item that's been a topic of conversation in Ward One this summer is rail traffic. That's not surprising, given the number of rail lines that crisscross the Eastside. There are many complexities as to who has jurisdiction over the various railroad companies and when questions or issues arise regarding them it can be frustrating for people to know who or where to call. Rail safety is also not surprisingly a concern for many. For those reasons, I joined with my colleagues Council Member Cam Gordon and Council Member Jacob Frey and the Shoreham Area Advisory Committee to host a community forum on this topic, with many guest panelists including Congressman Ellison, Sen. Dziedzic, Rep. Hornstein and others. It was a valuable opportunity to clarify jurisdictional issues and hear about new developments regarding rail safety, emergency training and legislative initiatives. See the article below for more detail.

Last, but not least, this summer brought Eastside Minneapolis its first parklet. I hope you'll have an opportunity to enjoy this charming little seasonal oasis on Central Avenue while it's in place for the next couple of months!
