Council Member's Message

June marks the traditional end of the school year and this month's newsletter highlights some of the exciting things happening in Eastside Minneapolis schools. I was very pleased to have the honor of welcoming both Edison High School's English As A Second Language (ESL) students and students from Heritage Academy of Technology & Science (located in the Tuttle School building in SE Como) to City Hall this spring to learn more about municipal government. I believe it's essential part of an overall education in civics to offer students more opportunities to learn about their City's government and how it works, as well as to expose them to the many leadership and career opportunities the City of Minneapolis can offer them after they finish their educations.

Our Eastside schools have been busy this year. Two Waite Park School teachers - Jamie Boardman and Kammie Jackson - were among MPS' Celebration of Teachers award winners for their significant impact on students and student achievement. Northeast Middle School and the Audubon Neighborhood Association have teamed up to explore an ambitious sustainability project. This kind of partnership demonstrates once again the ways in which Eastside neighborhoods and schools work together to strengthen our community.

Edison, Waite Park, Pillsbury, Marcy Open and Sheridan all showed off their musical skills this year at the Northeast Minneapolis Band Festival. Also, if you were out and about this spring, you may have seen the bright yellow windbreakers of Pillsbury Pedal Power students. This innovative program, which was honored with a City of Minneapolis Local Hero award last year, teaches Pillsbury students biking skills and then involves them in a variety of field trips and service learning projects.

This August, the entire Eastside community will have the opportunity to show support for our schools at the annual Northeast Community & School Bar-B-Que. Stay tuned for more details about this great event.
