Nicollet Mall Farmers Market opens today, Thursday, May 7, on Hennepin Ave. Due to Nicollet Mall reconstruction, the Nicollet Mall Farmers Market is moving to Hennepin Avenue between 5th and 10th streets from 2015-2016. This market opens for the season on Thursday, May 7.

We recently updated our map of City-owned lots that the City leases for community gardens. Green pins highlight land that is available and blue pins indicate land that is already leased for a community garden.

Urban Farms and Market Gardens Map

NEW: Map Your Urban Farm or Market Garden and Farmstand

Homegrown Minneapolis is piloting a new crowdsourced map of urban farms and market gardens and their farmstands in Minneapolis. The public map will be launched soon to increase awareness of the robust network of urban farms and market gardens operating in Minneapolis.

Farmstand information will also be added to our farmers market map. Our farmers market map is one of the most frequently visited pages on the City website. We are excited to add farmstands as another important source of fresh, local produce on this map.

Add your urban farm or market garden to the map!  It's quick and easy!

Food Council Selected as Environmental Initiative Award Finalist

The Homegrown Minneapolis Food Council is a finalist in the Food Stewardship category for the 2015 Environmental Initiative Awards.

One award winner in each category will be announced at the Environmental Initiative Awards dinner. One of the 18 finalist projects will also win the Partnership of the Year award.

The awards dinner will be held on Thursday, May 21 from 6:30-9:00pm at Nicollet Island Pavilion. A cocktail reception will precede the dinner from 5:30-6:30pm.

Green to Go: Environmentally Acceptable Packaging

The City of Minneapolis took one-step closer to its goal to be a zero waste city on Earth Day, April 22, 2015, with the implementation of the “Green To Go” program.  Food and beverages will no longer be served or packaged “to go” in expanded polystyrene foam (commonly known as Styrofoam™) and rigid polystyrene (#6 plastic). Minneapolis Urban Agriculture in the News

A recently published article in Urban Farm Online called "How to Host an Urban Ag Forum" discusses local organizers' leadership and success factors in hosting the 2013 Urban Agriculture Mayoral Forum.  

The forum raised levels of awareness among city leaders and could also serve to inspire similar changes around the country.

Food Equity Survey - Closes May 11

The Center for Science and Democracy at the Union of Concerned Scientists is working with a local advisory committee, community leaders, researchers, and policymakers to help lift up existing opportunities and address obstacles people in Minneapolis face in healthy eating. The Center is currently working towards a Food Justice meeting to be held in Minneapolis on June 4-5, 2015.

In order to inform the discussions at the meeting, the Center for Science and Democracy would like to hear from local residents about the assets, and the barriers, to securing healthy food for their families through a community surveyThe survey will close on Monday, May 11 and takes 10-15 minutes to complete (at most). The main findings from the community survey, and key highlights of the food justice meeting, will be shared at a public event on June 6 from 12- 4 pm at the Capri Theater. All are welcome to join! 

Minneapolis Community Innovation Fund Now Accepting Applications

Minneapolis neighborhood organizations are invited to apply for grants from the new Community Innovation Fund. The deadline for submitting applications is Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at 4:00 PM.  View the guidelines and application form.

An informational meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 5th at 5:30pm in the 2nd Floor conference room of the Crown Roller Mill building (105 5th Avenue South).

School Garden Survey Summary - Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS)

Did you know that 25 Minneapolis schools have school gardens? MPS Culinary and Nutrition Services and Youth Farm are excited to share the results of the 2014 MPS School Garden Survey! This survey helped identify the current landscape of school gardens in the district and the areas that need the most support. Read the summary to see data, quotes, and photos from several school gardens in the district. The results demonstrate a widespread interest in and support for school gardens throughout the district. Explore the interactive school garden map and read the summary report on the MPS website.

Organic Farm School is a unique ten-week educational summer program composed of lectures, related readings, hands-on workshops and field trips relevant to a larger understanding of sustainable agriculture, food justice and local and global food and farming politics.
