Ribbon cutting planned to celebrate new Highway 102 in Mt. Iron

A new road is always worth celebrating, but it's especially true when the new road means continued mining operations and the jobs that go with it. The St. Louis County Board voted today to open to traffic the new County Road 102 in Mountain Iron. The vote clears the way for United States Steel Company (Minntac) to further its mining operations in the area of the old road.

Representatives of U.S. Steel Minntac, the Steelworkers Union, and the City of Mountain Iron will join St. Louis County leaders for a ribbon cutting Wednesday, January 6, at 1 p.m. The event will be held on the new County Road 102 behind Walmart. Following the ribbon cutting, there will be gathering for coffee at the Mountain Iron Community Center.

"This is the second of three roads that St. Louis County has been working on to facilitate mining companies to continue operations," noted Commissioner Keith Nelson, who represents the sixth district where County Road 102 is located. "These are all commitments by the County to develop solutions for the economic drivers in our communities."

Construction of the new road began in 2013, with Minntac covering the costs and overseeing the project.

Other county roads moved or being moved to support mining operations include County State Aid Highway (CSAH) 70 near Babbitt, which was moved for North Shore Mining, and CSAH 5 near Chilsholm, which is being moved on behalf of Hibbing Taconite.
