County seeks proposals to prevent or limit Aquatic Invasive Species

St. Louis County is seeking proposals to battle Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) in 2016, and will hold a public workshop on the topic. Proposals should be for projects that will prevent the introduction or limit the spread of harmful, non-native species at all access sites within the County. Projects should relate to protecting and maintaining lakes, reservoirs, streams and rivers, and social and/or economic impacts of AIS.

The workshop will be Thursday, December 17, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Public Safety Building, 2030 North Arlington Avenue in Duluth. It's an opportunity for applicants to get help with their proposals and connect with AIS experts, and for grant recipients from this past year to share their experiences.

Interested applicants who are unable to attend the meeting should contact the St. Louis County Planning Department at (218) 725-5000 to set up an an alternative meeting time.

To be considered for implementation, projects must be valued at $10,000 or more, and must

address one or more of the seven categories and associated actions outlined in the St. Louis County Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention Plan:

  1. Assess county resources and risks for AIS introduction and spread.
  2. Increase resources for county-wide education and enforcement.
  3. Increase public awareness and participation in prevention.
  4. Raise available resources and leverage partnerships.
  5. Broaden knowledge of and participation in early detection and rapid response activities.
  6. Manage existing populations of AIS.
  7. Address specific pathways for AIS introduction

Applications and additional information on this request for proposals is available online at www.stlouiscountymn.gov/ais. The website also includes the option to sign up for AIS updates via email.

The deadline to apply is Wednesday, January 27, 2016. Applicants will be notified of funding decisions in March.
