Property tax deadline is October 15; reminder to check mail pickup times

Property taxes for the second half of the year are due next week  on Thursday, October 15. With that deadline comes a reminder from the St. Louis County Auditor for anyone planning to mail their payment: please pay attention to the mailbox pick up time. Changes at the Duluth Post Office earlier this year have affected mail pick up times at mailboxes around the region.

"Real estate or personal property tax payments must be postmarked on or before the October 15 deadline, in order to be considered on time,” said Donald Dicklich, St. Louis County Auditor. “With the previous round of payments due last May, there were several instances of people saying they'd mailed their payment on time, but the postmark didn't reflect that. We want to make sure that doesn't happen to anyone else.”

Pick up times vary by mailbox or post office, so people should check with their post office prior to mailing to ask about postmark procedures and times to avoid penalties.

Payments also can be made in person at the Auditor’s Office in the St. Louis County Courthouse in Duluth or the Northland Office Center in Virginia, or at the Auditor’s Service Center at the Miller Hill Mall. Payments also can be made online – additional fees apply – by following the link at stlouiscountymn.gov/propertytaxes.
