2015 Health and Human Service Conference focuses on "The Dance of Compassion"

"Nothing is ultimately effective without healthy human connection." So says Judge Shaun R. Floerke, who will be the keynote speaker at the 33rd annual St. Louis County Health and Human Service Conference at the DECC in Duluth. The conference will be held October 15 and 16 beginning at 8:30 a.m. each day. It typically draws up to 2,500 people from both the public and private sector in the fields of health and human services.

In his keynote address, Judge Floerke will share the importance of an integrated understanding of addiction, recovery, alliance, and mindful practice. He will discuss the rapidly expanding body of research surrounding brain development, trauma and resiliency; and will emphasize the need for a compassionate presence as an essential component of recovery. Speaking to an audience of health and human services professionals, Judge Floerke will encourage them to be a compassionate presence for those who are struggling, but at the same time pay attention to their own needs for renewal as they work in what is often a high stress and emotional job.

Judge Floerke currently is the Chief Judge of the 6th District. He leads a high risk felony DWI Court, and is Co-Chair of the Minnesota Drug Court Initiative. He pioneered a community restorative circle model working with domestic violence offenders; and is piloting a new approach to screen, educate and refer first-time offenders in order to prevent repeat offending. He serves with several teams of professionals and community members seeking to bring accountability and restoration for those in the judicial system.

The two-day Health and Human Service Conference offers more than 110 workshops, 14 institutes and 150 exhibits. The pre-registration deadline is Friday, October 9. Walk-in registration is available on both days of the conference. The registration fee is $50. For students and seniors age 62 and older, the fee is $40.

The St. Louis County Health and Human Services Conference is the second largest in the state for health and human services professionals, offering valuable opportunities for networking, sharing of innovative ideas and strengthening services provided. In addition to St. Louis County, which sponsors the annual conference, more than 60 community organizations contribute to the conference’s success as co-sponsors.
