You say potato... we say Potato Fest!

Growing potatoes, cooking potatoes, and a potato salad contest: it's the year of the potato and St. Louis County Extension has put together a fall gardening and healthy food program to celebrate this terrific tuber. Potato Fest will be held October 22 at St. Lawrence Church in Duluth, and will feature celebrity chef, Bea Ojakangas; Bob Olen, St. Louis County Horticulturist; and the St. Louis County Master Gardeners.

Ojakangas will share her expertise on potato cooking basics and demonstrate her favorite quick potato recipes. Olen will present the finer points on growing potatoes in this area and share the latest research findings on varieties and unique growing systems.

A potato salad contest is planned with a panel of local, celebrity judges tasting a variety of recipes. A few potato salad recipe entries from the public will be accepted. Anyone interested in submitting a recipe should contact St. Louis County Extension for details.

The evening will conclude with a potato dish sampling prepared by St. Louis County Extension Master Gardeners. Registration opens at 5 p.m., and the program begins at 5:30 p.m.  Pre-registration is advised as space is limited. St. Lawrence Church is located at 2410 Morris Thomas Rd. The fee is $24 which includes the educational program, potato resource guide and recipe book, plus food sampling.
