County employee honored for serving veterans

An employee of St. Louis County Public Health and Human Services is receiving statewide recognition for his work with veterans. Michael Dickinson, a Veterans Case Manager in the County’s Adult Services Division, was honored earlier this month with a Veterans’ Voices Legacy Award. The award was presented at a ceremony on September 11, at the Minnesota Humanities Center.

Dickinson is a retired Chief Petty Officer Veteran from Meadowlands who served 21 years in the military. He has dedicated his post-Navy career to advocating for and assisting Veterans by counseling them, connecting them with critical services, and advocating for them in both the court system and the social services realm.

Dickinson has worked for St. Louis County since 2011. As a Veterans Case Manager, he works closely with criminal justice partners in seeking solutions for Veterans that become involved in the criminal justice system. He also works to demystify the meaning of combat Veteran to non-Veterans and explains what can be done with existing programs and resources.

Prior to joining the County, Dickinson worked with the Minnesota Assistance Counsel for Veterans, where he counseled veterans in halfway houses, correctional settings, and those in drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

The 2015 Veterans' Voices Award recognizes, amplifies, and honors Minnesotans who have honorably served, are thriving, and making extraordinary contributions to their communities. These actively engaged, former and current military service members go above and beyond to make exceptional, positive contributions that improve the lives of people across Minnesota.
