Public invited to learn about Community Development Block Grant funds
St. Louis County distributed $1.7 million in federal grant money during 2014, to communities and area non-profit organizations. Known as Community Development Block Grants or CDBG funds, this money helped cover costs for kitchen renovations at the LEE Center in Hibbing, which serves the building’s residents and as a community nutrition site for the Meals on Wheels Program; building sites for Habitat for Humanity in the northern part of the county; commercial rehabilitation in Proctor; water and sewer infrastructure in nine communities; Salvation Army meal programs in Hibbing and Virginia; and services for homeless people throughout northern St. Louis County.
To help people better understand how CDBG funds are awarded, and to get input on projects that may receive funding next year, the St. Louis County Planning and Community Development Department is hosting a combination open house and public meetings twice next week.
Proctor City Hall/Community Center
Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1-3 p.m.
100 Pionk Drive, Proctor
Mountain Iron Community Center
Thursday, Sept. 10, 1-3 p.m.
8586 Enterprise Drive South, Mt. Iron
The public is encouraged to attend either of the events. The agenda will be the same at both, and includes a review of Fiscal Year 2014 accomplishments, an overview of the CDBG program, information on the 2016 process schedule, and a chance for citizens to provide input. Pre-application forms will be available for anyone interested in applying for a grant.
Questions about the open houses and public meetings or about CDBG funds in general may be directed to St. Louis County Planning and Community Development at (218) 749-7103 or visit stlouiscountymn.gov/planning.
