April 15, 2014 REVENUE PROGRESS REPORT

TAX DAY. Today is tax day, and for many middle-class families and small businesses in Minnesota, it’s Tax Cut Day. Read a commentary by Commissioner Frans to learn more about how Tax Cut Day is helping move Minnesota forward.

STATUS OF PRIORITIES.

Description

1

Complete

Revise the forms and instructions and work with the software vendors.

2

Complete

Make internal software changes so that we can process returns and issue accurate refunds.

3

In progress

Review returns that were already filed to determine if these taxpayers qualify for one of the new tax benefits.

We have divided the returns into two groups:

  • Returns that may need to be adjusted – We are manually reviewing these returns, from oldest filed to most recent, to determine if they should be adjusted.
  • Returns that definitely need to be adjusted – We are manually reviewing these returns, in order of filing.

We are also programming our integrated tax system to automate some of the reviews and adjustments.

4

Pending

Review the homestead credit refund and property tax refund claims filed and determine if adjustments are needed.

UPDATE YOUR ADDRESS. Taxpayers who have changed addresses since their last filing should notify the department of their new address so we can send refunds and correspondence to the correct place.

ALREADY FILED? We will review your return. If you qualify for a new deduction or credits, one of three things will happen after our review:

1. We will adjust your return and issue a refund, if due

2. We will request more information from you, adjust your return if possible, and issue a refund, if due

3. If we cannot adjust your return, we will notify you that you will need to file an amended return

STATS. Approximately 80% (2.2 million) of Minnesotans have filed their taxes.

PRESS CONFERENCE. Commissioner Frans joined Governor Dayton and Minnesotans who are benefiting from the recently passed middle-class tax cuts in a press conference today. The video will be available on our website soon.
