January 2022
Greetings and Happy 2022! As we ring in the new year, I am excited for the opportunities that lie ahead. Although there is much work to be done, with the strong leadership of the Workforce Innovation Board and through the exceptional work of our staff and partners, we will surely accomplish great things together and continue our efforts toward economic prosperity and opportunity for all Ramsey County residents and businesses.
January is Health Care Month in Minnesota! This newsletter is filled with stories, resources, features and events showcasing this critically important industry. We recognize the heroic efforts of the 387,500 health care workers across the state, including the 35,932 health care professionals working in Ramsey County, and we raise awareness of the wide range of in-demand health care career opportunities available in our community. I hope you take a look!

The Downtown Service Center located at 160 E. Kellogg Ave. (Government Center East) in Saint Paul will be temporarily relocated to Metro Square beginning Tuesday, Jan. 18. The temporary location at Suite 2500 on the skyway level will provide the same services during the same hours and days of operation for an estimated four- to six-week period.
Operations at Roseville and Maplewood Service Center locations will continue unchanged. For information about all Ramsey County Service Centers, please call 651-266-0600.
The relocation is necessitated by traffic and other disruptions related to the federal civil rights trial of former Minneapolis Police officers scheduled at the U.S. Courthouse directly across the street from 160 E. Kellogg Ave. Jury selection is scheduled to begin on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2022.
The critically important role of health care workers has been highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dedicated health care workers have saved thousands of lives in Ramsey County and across the state.
To honor our health care heroes and to elevate the need for more, Governor Walz and the Ramsey County Board of Commissioners have proclaimed January as Health Care Month. Read the Ramsey County Board Proclamation and check out the Health Care Month pages on CareerForceMN.com and RamseyCounty.us for resources and events happening in the metro area and across the state.

Medica had been based in the Minneapolis suburb of Minnetonka for decades. Following the 2020 civil unrest that occurred across the Twin Cities, company officials were determined to create jobs where high unemployment and broad diversity were present. Guided by the company's mission statement “… to be the trusted health plan of choice for customers, members, partners and our employees,” Medica decided to open a call center and claims processing operation in St. Paul, hiring local people to work there.
“It would have been easy to make a financial donation, but we wanted to do more,” said Rich Buckley, Medica’s Manager of Talent Acquisition. “The decision to commit to a bricks-and-mortar location offered more than just transactional support. It demonstrated Medica’s commitment to the community and our employee culture, and offered an opportunity for people from these communities to truly build careers.”

The Inclusive Workplaces Cohort supports 17 local employers in becoming more inclusive workplaces to amplify the diversity of our community as a tool for economic growth. These selected Ramsey County employers are participating in a 10-month peer learning cohort while advancing equity and inclusion in their organizations. Each of the employers has made a commitment of executive leadership participation with an agreement to bring about tangible action or policy changes to their organizations. The WIB is happy to feature two participating organizations each month. This month, we are spotlighting Goodwill Easter Seals MN and Jewish Family Services of Saint Paul.
