The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) is currently accepting applications from individuals interested in AmeriCorps service with Minnesota GreenCorps during the 2014-2015 program year for the following position:
Gardening Matters - Minneapolis
Increase community food production in household and community
gardens by supporting renters in an area of south Minneapolis with a lack of
community garden space and contaminated soil.
Implement a system for engaging
community members and landowners to start container and raised bed gardens
Build garden infrastructure
with interested landlords and organize groups of tenant gardeners
Source inexpensive materials,
including containers and/or lumber
Organize educational activities
on container gardening and beginner vegetable growing
Where possible, work alongside
renters to lay the groundwork for new community gardens

A valid driver’s license in good standing is required for this position.

What do MN GreenCorps members do?
Minnesota GreenCorps is an AmeriCorps program, coordinated by the MPCA, which places AmeriCorps members with organizations around the state to spend 11 months addressing environmental issuesand building community resilience. More information on the program is available here.
This position is one of 40 full-time Minnesota GreenCorps members the MPCA is placing with local governments, nonprofit organizations and educational institutions statewide to serve on projects in the areas of:
Air Quality (including Energy Conservation and Green Transportation)
Waste Prevention and Recycling
Green Infrastructure (including Local Foods, Stormwater Management, and Urban Forestry)
Living Green Outreach
Member activities include but are not limited to: environmental education and outreach to people of all ages, mobilizing volunteers, implementing sustainability-related projects, collecting, benchmarking and analyzing data, measuring environmental results, field work, collaborating with local officials and community members, and much more.
All service positions are for 11 months. There is one other
open position at this time, as a Waste Prevention and Recycling member serving
with the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District in Duluth (find out more
here. All other Minnesota GreenCorps positions have been filled at this time.
Members must complete 1,700 hours of service (around 40 hours per week).
Member Benefits
In addition to gaining valuable skills and experience in the environmental field, members receive a living allowance, an offer of health insurance, and loan forbearance. Upon completing the program, participants receive an Education Award which can be used to pay off qualified student loans, or to finance future education.
