Brainerd, Minn. ― Crow Wing County Landfill
has paid a fine and taken corrective actions as a result of hazardous and solid
waste violations at its facility east of Brainerd, Minn.
According to Minnesota Pollution
Control Agency staff inspection reports, in November 2012, the facility accepted
15 barrels labeled as ignitable liquid hazardous waste for temporary storage.
The barrels were disposed of in the municipal solid waste portion of the
landfill, which is in violation of MPCA hazardous and solid waste regulations. The
hazardous waste that posed a potential threat to human health has been removed
from the site.
Crow Wing County Landfill has paid a
$12,000 civil penalty and completed corrective actions to satisfy conditions of
the enforcement action.
When calculating penalties, the MPCA
takes into account how seriously the violation affected the environment,
whether it is a first time or repeat violation, and how promptly the violation
was reported to appropriate authorities. It also attempts to recover the
calculated economic benefit gained by failure to comply with environmental laws
