TransparencyMN Website Receives State Government Innovation Award

St. Paul—The TransparencyMN website yesterday was awarded a Humphrey School of Public Affairs’ State Government Innovation Award as part of the state’s commitment to financial accountability.

The website, published by Minnesota Management & Budget and created in partnership with other state agencies, provides real time information about state government finances and operations. A section of TransparencyMN called MN Open Checkbook offers direct access to information on state budgets, payments to vendors, contracts and grants, and employee payroll data.

“With a few mouse clicks, the TransparencyMN website provides a virtually instant response to searches for government financial data. Decades ago, these queries may have taken days to process. We appreciate being recognized for providing government transparency in a user friendly format and I thank our employees for their innovative and remarkable work on this project,” said Myron Frans, Commissioner of Minnesota Management & Budget.

TransparencyMN uses a robust business intelligence tool to make complex financial information understandable.  It provides Minnesotans with information on how their tax dollars are being spent in a concise and user friendly format.  The information is updated daily, providing users with timely information on state budgeting and spending.

In addition to the Humphrey award, Minnesota has been recognized as one of the emerging states in providing citizens with tax budgeting and spending information by the United States Public Research Group (USPIRG). The USPIRG researches state governments and ranks each state annually on how well they provide public access to government spending data. TransparencyMN has helped Minnesota move to the top tier in these rankings.
