Revision
to last week’s Gem regarding Steele County’s Tobacco Free Grounds workstie
policy: Congratulations to Jane Nyquist and the Steele County team for leading the way to
Steele County’s adoption of a Tobacco Free Grounds worksite policy. There
was a unanimous county board vote in favor of the policy on March 17. The
policy will affect over 250 employees and many visitors to county offices. The
policy went into effect March 27. Steele County Public Health is a TFC grantee as part of the Four
Corners Partnership.
March 1 the Wilhite Condominium Association in
Minneapolis voted to adopt a smoke-free policy for their building. The policy
will include e-cigarettes and cover all indoor units without any grandfathering
of existing smokers. Currently the smoke-free condominium movement is gaining
momentum but many smoke-free condominium policies allow smokers to continue
smoking in their units by grandfathering them in. The Wilhite sets a great
example by going completely smoke-free.
Do you have a resource or success story (“gem”) to share for a future issue? Submissions for each week’s Thursday publication are due by noon every Tuesday to Health.MakingitBetter@state.mn.us or community specialists for:

If you are developing a new
service that you haven’t provided before, why not use the quality planning
approach to build “quality” into this new service? Quality planning is
part of quality management and the first stage of the quality trilogy.
Quality planning begins with identifying both your external and internal
customers and then determining their needs for that particular service.
The next steps are to develop goals that will meet the needs of your customers
and design the service around those customer needs and goals. Then pilot
that service for a period of time while monitoring the results. The next
step is to compare the actual results to the goals. If the service is
meeting the established goals and customer needs, then the service can be fully
implemented. If the service is not meeting the established goals and
customer needs, that is the time to apply the quality improvement
approach. To learn more about quality planning, visit the MDH QI Toolbox
here. For more information, please contact susan.brace-adkins@state.mn.us
or at 651-201-3875.

The Center for Prevention at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota has
announced a new funding initiative to support communities working to eliminate
tobacco inequities.
The overall smoking rate in
Minnesota has decreased dramatically in recent years. However, there are
populations that still experience high levels of tobacco use and secondhand
smoke exposure. The goal of this funding is to reduce tobacco use in these populations
by supporting community-driven, culturally specific efforts that will raise
awareness and/or influence organizational policy and local public policy.
This is a two-part RFP. Part one is to solicit proposals
from any interested and eligible organization. The deadline for part one is 3pm on May 6. Blue Cross
will then select organizations it would like to continue through the selection
process. For those organizations, Blue Cross will require additional
application information.

Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States. The use of electronic health records can play an important role in improving health by supporting tobacco cessation efforts.
This webinar will explore and identify opportunities for using electronic health records (EHRs) to improve two of the ABCS of Million Hearts: smoking cessation efforts and improving blood pressure control. Furthermore, we will provide an overview and national perspective of EHR use, state and local examples, and available resources to support these efforts.
The intended audience for this webinar includes state health agencies, local health agencies and community based clinics. Click here to register.
