There
are a number of quality improvement tools that can be used to identify and
resolve common community engagement challenges. For example, a community
leadership team could structure an affinity diagram to identify major reasons
for low participation in meetings. A group would begin by defining the
problem or issue to be discussed. The group then brainstorms possible
causes for low participation. After brainstorming, the group begins to
sort the ideas into categories that are connected or seem similar. The
group then spends time discussing the connection/similarities until they reach
a consensus on the categories. This activity can allow your group to
identify which categories might be the biggest factors in contributing to the
low participation rates and develop an action plan to address these
factors.
For more information on constructing an affinity diagram, please
visit the MDH QI Toolbox here. If you have questions about additional QI tools to use or want more information
on the affinity diagram, please contact Susan.brace-Adkins@state.mn.us
or 651-201-3875.

Mental health is essential to an
individual’s well-being, interpersonal relationships, and ability to live a
full and productive life. Mental health disorders are among the most common
causes of disability in the United States, and individuals with untreated mental
health disorders are at high risk for many unhealthy and unsafe behaviors,
including alcohol or drug abuse, violent or self-destructive behavior, and
suicide. This Who’s Leading the Leading Health Indicators? webinar will focus
on activities and interventions related to mental health disorders. Through 4
presentations focusing on data, communication efforts, and effective
implementation strategies at the state level, presenters will explore the
importance of mental health and the progress we are making to address this
public health issue. Click here for more information and to register.
