Congratulations to Dakota County SHIP staff and the City of South St. Paul on their adoption of a Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan in December, laying the groundwork for safer and more equitable transportation for pedestrians and bicyclists!
The Washington County Housing and Redevelopment Authority has written a new tobacco-free policy for all their buildings and grounds, which will be in effect in all sites by June 2016. That means 327 smoke-free units for 702 residents. In addition to this work, they determined that their own office building and grounds in Woodbury should also be tobacco-free. That new policy will go into effect June 1, 2016. Congratulations to ALA MN staff, Washington County SHIP staff and the Washington County Housing and Redevelopment Authority!

Businesses across the nation are involved in every aspect of
their communities and the economy and can be powerful partners in terms of
improving the health of the nation, said George Isham, a senior advisor at
HealthPartners, Inc., a senior fellow at the HealthPartners Institute for
Education and Research, and a co-chair of the Institute of Medicine (IOM)
Roundtable on Population Health Improvement. On July 30, 2014, the IOM
roundtable held a workshop at the New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM) in New
York City to consider the role of business in improving population health
beyond the usual worksite wellness and health promotion activities. The
workshop was designed to explore how businesses can be effective key leaders
and partners in improving the health of communities and why this is good for
business and for the economic vibrancy of communities. Read the report online here.
Health is influenced by a variety of factors, many of which
fall outside the health care delivery sector. These determinants of
health include the characteristics of where people live, work, learn, and play.
Decision and policy making in areas such as transportation, housing, and education
at different levels of government, as well as in the private sector, can have
far-reaching impacts on health. There has been increasing dialogue on
incorporating a health perspective in policies, programs, and projects outside
the health field, including a 2011 IOM report that calls for government and the
private sector to adopt approaches that look for shared benefits. Read the report online here.
