Gems

On January 7, 2015, Crow Wing County Community Services and Essentia Health hosted the Crow Wing Energized Health and Wellness Summit.  Crow Wing Energized is a unique partnership between public health and a health system is the result of a grassroots community health movement that kicked off nearly a year ago.   There were 115 participants and 22 table presenters representing local work being done.  SHIP work was highlighted and many community partners were present to share ideas as well as to create new partnerships.

Among the presenters were Dr. Dan Halvorsen of the University of MN, Dr. Adam Rees, President of Essentia Health Central Region, and local recipients of SHIP funds. Congrats on this great success!

Do you have a resource or success story (“gem”) to share for a future issue?  Submissions for each week’s Thursday publication are due by noon every Tuesday to Health.MakingitBetter@state.mn.us or grant managers for:

Training Series ~ Evidence-based Public Health ~ Minnesota Dept of Health

Dear Colleagues, we are pleased to announce that the Minnesota Department of Health’s (MDH’s) Office of Statewide Health Improvement Initiatives (OSHII) and the Health Promotion and the Chronic Disease Division (HPCD) are jointly planning to host a regular training series for MDH and Local Public Health staff focused on honing public health skills. The trainings will be broadcast via WebEx from MDH’s Golden Rule Building.

The purpose of this evidenced-based public health training series is to build staff and organizational capacity to use proven and field-tested approaches to more efficiently and successfully plan, design, implement, communicate and evaluate public health initiatives. Many of the future trainings will be based upon material and content developed by national experts at the Prevention Resource Center at Washington University in St. Louis Missouri.

Upcoming Session: The first offering in this series is a session on Communicating to Policy Makers on Friday, Jan 30, 1- 2:30pm (mark your calendars!). More information will follow as the date for that session draws near.

Survey Request: The planning team seeks your input and feedback in building a training series that will meet your interests and needs. This survey link is a set of set of initial course topics being considered. Please provide your feedback on the suggested topics by completing the following brief survey by Friday, Jan 23.

Webinar Series ~ Farm to School & Youth Leadership ~ Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy

This two part webinar series will introduce participants to IATP's high school level Farm to School Youth Leadership Curriculum. The curriculum is designed to empower youth, teach them about their local food system, engage them in meaningful, hands-on learning activities that also strengthen their school’s Farm to School program and link them directly to farmers in their community. Implementation of the curriculum in a high school setting simultaneously gives students ownership and commitment to their school’s Farm to School program, while reducing the amount of legwork and research required of teachers or food service staff to establish or expand a Farm to School initiative.

Part 1: Helping students understand their food systems
