Kudos to CTG grantee Healthy Northland and the
American Lung Association. After nearly three years of hard work towards this
policy change, St. Louis County Health and Human Services has adopted a
licensing change which will require all home-based daycares in the county to be
completely smoke-free 24/7, beginning January 1st, 2015. Congratulations
to the Healthy Northland and ALA, as well as their various partners, on this big win!
Do you have a resource or success story (“gem”) to share for a future issue? Submissions for each week’s Thursday publication are due by noon every Tuesday to Health.MakingitBetter@state.mn.us or grant managers for:
Each month, we will highlight one of your peers who has been a Basecamp superuser.
January's Basecampers are Leah Schueler of Kandiyohi-Renville and the Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota.
Leah and BikeMN are a great example of how Basecamp can foster new partnerships: Leah posted a survey to share as a resource which caught the eye of the Bicycle Alliance who in turn contacted them to partner on a Bike Friendly
Community Assessment and application. As a result, the City of
Willmar is on its way to becoming a Bike Friendly community.
Thank you, Leah and BikeMN for helping make Basecamp a go-to place.
Remember: Basecamp is a great place to hold discussions and share resources and events that focus on Health Improvement. Local Public Health and Tribal Governments may sign up to use Basecamp by sending an email to the Making it Better Log account.

If you like to watch
YouTube to learn how to do things, here is a great resource to learn how to use
a few quality improvement tools. The Western Region Public Health
Training Center from the Arizona Department of Public Health has developed a
Quality Improvement Series for YouTube. There are 5 videos within the
series detailing how to develop a Pareto Chart, a Histogram, a Fishbone
Diagram, an Affinity Diagram and an alternative brainstorming technique called
Brain Writing. They are between 3-5 minutes in length and could
easily be used for just-in-time training or on a list of resources for a QI
project team or QI council. Check them out today here.

Minnesota just released their new community-based funding initiative. The
Community Engagement grants initiative will provide funding to nonprofits,
American Indian Nations, local government entities and safety-net clinics that
work with people of low socioeconomic status (low SES – i.e., people with low
income and educational attainment). The focus of this funding opportunity is to
connect low-SES smokers to existing cessation services. Grants are for a
12-month period and range from $10,000-$50,000.
Many grantees are working with local groups/clinics on linking patients to
cessation services. This grant might be another opportunity for some
grantees to explore and help increase the impact of their work.
