Minnesota schools and their
partners are invited to apply for $1.25 million in Safe Routes to School grant
funds for projects that will help more children safely walk and bicycle to
school. Applications are due Jan 9, 2015.
All non-profit organizations and government entities in Minnesota may be
eligible partners, including tribal nations, schools, school districts, cities,
counties and regional planning organizations.
The
Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is soliciting Farm to School grant
proposals from K-12 institutions and child care centers. Grants are available
for equipment purchases that will allow schools and child care centers to
purchase, prepare and serve more Minnesota grown and raised food as well
as for feasibility plans that identifies specific equipment, tools, training or
policies needed by school districts and child care centers. The MDA
anticipates awarding $500,000 in competitive grants in 2015. Proposals
must be received no later than 4:00pm on Monday, November 3, 2014.

A directory of farmers
interested in selling farm fresh foods to family child care homes and child
care centers across Minnesota is now available! The directory includes the farm
contact information, website, farm products for sale, whether farm tours are
offered, whether the farmer is interested in visiting child care home and
centers, and if the farm has liability insurance. The directory was created by
Renewing the Countryside, a local non-profit organization. Peruse the directory

The Federal Highway
Administration (FHWA) released its new Bicycle Safety Guide and Countermeasure
Selection System (BIKESAFE). This resource helps support the U.S. Department of
Transportation’s new pedestrian and bicycle safety initiative. BIKESAFE is an online
guide for implementing countermeasures to improve the safety and mobility of
bicyclists. It provides practitioners with information and tools to review and
select engineering and roadway infrastructure improvements to reduce bicyclist
injuries.
Hands-on
training for child care providers on how to source local foods, prepare quick,
healthy, and safe meals and snacks for children, and understand the importance
of purchasing local foods and offering fruits and vegetables. Training includes
hands-on food preparation training.

The Minnesota Children and Nature Connection is hosting Connecting Diverse Communities to the Outdoors: Addressing Culture, Equity and Access. Disparities in access to and use of outdoor recreation spaces matter.
