Webinar ~ Tensions and Tools: Navigating the Tricky Terrain of Advancing Health Equity ~ Minnesota Department of Health ~ Nov 3, 10am

Advancing  health equity is embedded into the workplans of OSHII grantees. However, being honest and effective in advancing health equity means navigating some difficult terrain: issues of structural racism, the distribution of resources, power dynamics, local politics, participatory decision-making, and more. This session will begin with a brief overview of the tensions identified in the 2014 Minnesota Dept. of Health Advancing Health Equity Report to the Legislature, followed by a panel discussing ways to navigate these and similar tensions.

Local SHIP grantees and MDH staff will share their experience via a webinar on Nov 3 from 10-11:30am.  Preregistration is required but you can preregister at any time.  Materials for the webinar are attached to the session information. Click here to register.

Webinar ~ Smoke-Free Policies Redux: Current Status & Current Challenges ~ Tobacco Control Legal Consortium ~ Oct 30, 12pm

State and local smoke-free laws that protect workers and the public from exposure to secondhand smoke in public places and places of employment are a critical component of any community's public health efforts. While adoption of these policies has been very successful, with over 30 states and thousands of local communities passing some form of smoke-free policy, millions of people in the U.S. are still exposed to secondhand smoke in public places and places of work on a daily basis.

This webinar will review the current profile of smoke-free policies around the country and look at some local recent successes. Registration information is here.

Resources ~ The Toxic Duo: Preemption and Tobacco Control ~ Public Health Law Center

Public health practitioners and tobacco control advocates generally agree that preemption is bad for tobacco control. Preemption occurs when a "higher" level of government eliminates or limits the authority of a "lower" level of government to regulate a certain issue. Because local control is so integral to tobacco control, the tobacco industry and its allies have historically used, and continue to use, preemptive strategies to thwart smoke-free laws, youth access and retailer licensing restrictions, advertising and promotion regulations, and similar policies. The Consortium's latest publications are reminders of how preemption can weaken, impede, derail and defeat tobacco control efforts.
