Gems

Kudos go out to the SHIP grantees that assisted in the passing and implementation of tobacco-free outdoor spaces policies during the third quarter of SHIP. Freeborn County SHIP implemented a tobacco-free policy, including electronic cigarettes, in April for the Albert Lea Ice Arena.

Kudos go out to the SHIP grantees that assisted in the passing and implementation of worksite wellness tobacco-free grounds policies during the third quarter of SHIP. PartnerSHIP 4 Health (which includes Clay, Wilkin, Becker and Otter Tail Counties) implemented two policies, at the Perham Health Clinic and United Community Bank, between June and July; and, Fillmore-Houston SHIP implemented a tobacco-free grounds policy in May for Houston County Public Health. The Houston County Public Health and Perham Health Clinic policy changes made those spaces completely tobacco-free, including electronic cigarettes.

“If you want kids to eat their vegetables, then you have to make them taste good.” Tom Pellegrino, Osseo Food and Nutrition Services director, wants kids to LOVE vegetables and he’s making it happen. Tom’s kitchen staff have been part of several train-the-trainer vegetable preparation workshops conducted by Chef Marshall O’Brien. Workshop topics included using roasting techniques, cooking with herbs and spices, and preparing scratch recipes. The workshops are showing results in the form of increased student vegetable consumption. In the past, the kitchen staff at Maple Grove Sr. High would serve two pounds of Brussel sprouts in a day but recently went through 15 pounds! Now that’s getting kids to eat their vegetables.

Tool ~ Project Charters ~ Minnesota Department of Health

Project Charters--well worth the time. A project charter is a project management tool that defines the purpose of the project.  Project charters can help any project by identifying the problem and the impact on the agency and are routinely used in quality improvement projects.   Project charters can specify the scope of the project and used as a reference when individuals within a group want to take on tasks outside the scope of the project.  A good project charter includes goals and objectives that provide direction for team members as they move forward with the project.  Roles and responsibilities of team members are also clarified in a project charter to divide and conquer specific activities so not just one person is stuck with the work.    Project charters can be very helpful for a group that may be struggling with getting started or staying focused.   There are many types and formats of project charters.   A quality improvement project charter example can be found on the MDH OPI website

Conference ~ Healthy Schools Conference: Take Action for Healthy Kids ~ Minneapolis, Nov 12

Healthy schools provide welcoming, safe and healthy places to learn and grow. They recognize the role that health and wellness play in building a foundation for student success and closing the achievement gap. A healthy school allows all students to feel supported, engaged and empowered to make choices that support their well-being and school success. Minnesota's new Safe and Supportive Schools Act sets new expectations for healthy schools. The 2014 Healthy Schools Conference: Take Action for Kids will feature evidence-based policies and practices that allow students and staff to learn and work in a healthy school environment. Click here to register.

Report ~ Vending Contradictions: Snack and Beverage Options on Public Property ~ Center for Science in the Public Interest

New CSPI Report shows that 58% of vending machine beverages on state and local public property are sugar-sweetened beverages. Foods are worse; only 5% of vending machine food options are healthy. Providing healthier options on public property ensures access to healthier foods and beverages, helps to create more supportive food environments, and prevents state and local governments from undermining their other obesity prevention work. Article ~ Tobacco Industry Marketing: An Analysis of Direct Mail Coupons and Giveaways ~ Tobacco Control

A newly published paper in Tobacco Control examines the value of tobacco coupons sent through the mail. The paper, "Tobacco industry marketing: an analysis of direct mail coupons and giveaways," shares results from an observational study investigating the content of direct mail marketing items sent in response to registration on select tobacco industry websites.

The analysis of 659 tobacco company mailings sent between July 2011 and June 2012 reveals that 86.5 percent of mailings contained at least one coupon and that the average coupon value per mailing was $4.17. Many of the mailings promoted snus alongside cigarettes, which could contribute to dual use.

This study highlights how the industry uses direct mail marketing to reduce the cost of tobacco products, promote the dual use of cigarettes and snus, and build brand loyalty. More research is needed to understand how tobacco companies use direct mail marketing so communities can craft effective policy solutions to counteract this type of tobacco marketing. It can be found online here.
