Kudos to TFC grantee, WellShare
International, for working with the Islamic Center of St Cloud and the
Tawfiiq Islamic Center in Minneapolis to adopt tobacco-free grounds policies,
both including electronic cigarettes. Through engaging Somali and East African
communities, their efforts have helped educate and change the social norms
around tobacco use and exposure among Somali and East African youth and young
adults in the Twin Cities area!
Sept 23, the Dodge County Board
of Commissioners unanimously passed two new policies to address the sale and
use of tobacco products and electronic cigarettes. The use of e-cigarettes will
now be prohibited at most indoor public places within Dodge County, including
bars and restaurants. The county tobacco licensing ordinance was also updated to:
- Require a county license to sell e-cigarettes.
- Prohibit the smoking (or “sampling”) of tobacco
and e-cigarettes in retail stores.
- Prohibit new tobacco retail stores within 1000 feet
of schools, playgrounds, and other youth facilities.
- Increase licensing fees.
- Cap the number of county-issued tobacco licenses
at 20.
- Prohibit the sale of tobacco, electronic
cigarettes and related devices at pharmacies, which includes stores that
contain an on-site pharmacy.
Congratulations to the Dodge County and the Four Corners Partnership staff on your hard work, supported
by ClearWay funding, and success in protecting and maintaining the health of
Dodge County residents!

CADCA's
commitment to tobacco prevention and control is stronger than ever, but with
changes in our funding and future projects we will no longer be using this
communication vehicle. To continue to receive updates about tobacco, join the Geographic
Health Equity Alliance (The Alliance) today! The Alliance's mission is
to raise awareness about geographic health disparities related to tobacco and
cancer and to support the development, dissemination and implementation of
effective public health practices. Click
here to join!
The
Alliance is operated by CADCA and is one of seven national networks funded by
the CDC to address health disparities. The priorities of The Alliance are to
identify gaps in information, provide leadership and expertise and promote
health interventions that support the appropriate partnerships to reduce
geographic health disparities.

A
new analysis released online by the journal Nicotine and Tobacco Research
finds that nearly one in 10 U.S. adults, about 20.4 million people, had ever
used an electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) at least one time as of
2013. E-cigarette use was especially prominent among current and former
cigarette smokers. Both groups had an almost four-fold increase in ever use
from 2010-2013. Current cigarette smokers who have ever used an e-cigarette
increased from 9.8% in 2010 to 36.5% in 2013, and 9.4% of current cigarette
smokers—about four million people—had also used e-cigarettes within the past 30
days. The increase in former cigarette smokers who have ever tried e-cigarettes
went from 2.5% in 2010 to 9.6% in 2013. In contrast, no change was observed
among adults who had never smoked cigarettes during this period (1.3% to
1.2%). The data come from the 2010 through 2013 HealthStyles
survey, an annual consumer-based web survey of U.S. adults aged 18 and over. You can view the abstract here.
The American Association for Cancer Research
recently released its Cancer
Progress report 2014. This is primarily a report about the development,
diagnosis, and treatment of cancer, but also includes excellent tobacco control
content (pages 14-17) in the Healthy Living section. The report contains some very nice charts/images. News
story.
Last week the
American Journal of Preventive Medicine published “Menthol Cigarette Smoking
among Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Adults.” The new study shows
LGBT adults smoke menthol cigarettes at more than twice the rate of straight
adults, 10% vs. 4%, with some disparities even more pronounced among certain
groups within the LGBT community. The authors of the study are from the
University of Kentucky, the University of California at San Francisco, and the
CDC. Click here to read the report.

Fifty years ago, the U.S. Surgeon General released the first
report on smoking and health. Since then, there have been an estimated 20
million deaths in the United States due to smoking or exposure to secondhand
smoke—more than the population of the state of New York.
To illustrate the human toll of smoking, CDC’s Office on
Smoking and Health (OSH) will be launching an online memorial using the hashtag
#20million. This memorial honors those people—spouses, mothers, fathers,
children, sisters, brothers, friends—who have lost their lives due to a
smoking-related illness.
OSH invites you to share a
memorial—a message and/or a photo—of someone you know who has lost their life to a
smoking-related disease. By posting your memorial on Facebook, Google+, Instagram,
Twitter, or Vine with the hashtag #20million, your submission will become a
part of CDC’s #20Million Memorial. You can see
all submissions to the #20Million Memorial by visiting www.cdc.gov/20million beginning Oct 7.
On October 6, CDC is asking you and staff within your organization to share memorial messages
so the page will prepopulate prior to the launch on October 7.
