Gems

Improving the walkability and bikeability of Worthington has been a key focus for Cottonwood, Jackson, Nobles recently. Worthington City Council members, the Parks & Recreation advisory board, Public Health staff, and other city leaders came together two weeks ago for a bike lane demonstration, suggested by the local SHIP committee. Lines were chalked out on an existing street so that the group could gather to get a clearer picture of how bike lanes would change the traffic landscape around Lake Okabena and other areas of the city. The bike lane demonstration was a catalyst to heightened interest and discussion around bike lane implementation in the city of Worthington. You can see a picture here.

On Aug 27, the St. Paul City Council unanimously passed an ordinance prohibiting the sale of cheap single cigars. St. Paul retailers will now be required to:

  • Charge at least $2.10 for a single cigar; or
  • Sell cigars in original packages of five or more.

St. Paul becomes the largest city in Minnesota to enact this type of regulation. The implementation of a minimum price or pack size will help protect youth from the dangers of tobacco.  By limiting access, cheap tobacco products will become less appealing to that population. A big congratulations to ANSR’s Ramsey Tobacco Coalition and their supporting organizations for their dedication and hard work in the passing of the St. Paul ordinance!
