Kudos go out to the SHIP grantees that have been working on the implementation of tobacco-free post-secondary campus policies. The following are a few highlights from the grantees that have assisted in implementing or updating tobacco-free post-secondary policies during the second quarter of the SHIP grant cycle. St. Paul-Ramsey assisted in the implementation of one tobacco-free campus policy in quarter two, and two more policies were implemented between May and July. Also, Horizon has been working with one campus that is in the adoption stage of a tobacco-free campus policy and will implement one tobacco-free campus policy next year. Finally, Polk-Norman-Mahnomen has one campus that updated an existing tobacco-free policy to include e-cigarettes that took effect in July.

Study ~ More Than a Quarter of a Million Youth Who Had Never Smoked a Cigarette Used Electronic Cigarettes in 2013 ~ CDC

Study finds youth who have used e-cigarettes are almost twice as likely to intend to smoke conventional cigarette. More than a quarter of a million youth who had never smoked a cigarette used electronic cigarettes in 2013, according to a CDC study published in the journal Nicotine and Tobacco Research.  This number reflects a three-fold increase, from about 79,000 in 2011, to more than 263,000 in 2013.Click here to view the CDC press release in its entirety and here for an infographic.

Resource ~ Retailer Training Video ~ FDA

FDA released a new compliance training video for tobacco retailers regarding impersonal modes of tobacco sales, such as vending machines or self-service displays. Report ~ Designed for Adiction: How the Tobacco Industry Has Made Cigarettes More Addictive, More Attractive to Kids and Even More Deadly ~ Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids

This report confirms that today's cigarettes are more addictive, more attractive to kids and more deadly than 50 years ago. Smokers today, including the 2.7 million kids throughout the United States who currently smoke, are at far greater risk than ever before.

Research Paper ~ Has the Tobacco Industry Evaded the FDA's Ban on "Light" Cigarette Descriptors? ~ Tobacco Control

Paper published in Tobacco Control presents empirical evidence that the cigarette companies have effectively nullified the ban on selling cigarettes with the misleading descriptors "light" and "mild" that are in both the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act.

Webinar ~ Exploring the Connection Between Overweight, Obesity and Cancer ~ Florida Department of Health ~ Today, 12p

Research has confirmed that being overweight or obese increases the risk for certain cancers. Dr. Tanya Agurs-Collins will provide information about the factors involved with increased cancer risk and overweight and obesity including: the effect of hormones, insulin, metabolic syndrome, and inflammation. She will also provide a review of the biological factors influenced by various dietary choices. Dr. Catherine Howard will share lessons learned from the first year of Florida’s Healthiest Weight initiative.
