Register for the Birth Registrar Conference

You’re Invited!

If you are reading this newsletter, you have been identified as a Birth Registrar or someone interested in Minnesota Birth Registration. The Excellence in Birth Registration Training & Conference is an annual event especially for you. Each year, birth registrars, supervisors, and midwives from all over the state gather to learn about birth registration needs, challenges, and solutions. We hope you will join us.

This year’s Excellence in Birth Registration Conference is Thursday, May 1, 2014, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Hampton Inn Shoreview, conveniently located in the northern Twin Cities metro area at Interstate 694 & Lexington Avenue. (Confirmation and driving directions will be sent to registered participants).

The fee for the conference, lunch, breaks and all materials is $43.10 per person. Register online at www.health.state.mn.us/registration by the April 25 deadline. There will be no onsite registration.

Among many topics on the agenda, this year's conference will look at the diverse, ever-changing cultural landscape in Minnesota. Have you ever wondered why we see so many Mohammeds, Xiongs, and Hershbergers in our birth records? Or why some cultures don’t name their babies right away? Wonder how all of the medical information is used – and who is using it? Or what is happening with the eVital Records interoperability project? What’s the best way to make corrections – or how to avoid them?

We’ll cover these topics and offer helpful tips for establishing paternity in ever-changing family situations. Our popular “ask the experts” panel will be available for your questions, too.  We’ll also celebrate your success with the Excellence in Birth Registration Awards presentation.

LIMITED FREE REGISTRATION FOR NEWCOMERS
MDH has a very limited number of free Excellence in Birth Registration Conference registrations still available. Requests will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis from people who have not attended the conference in the past. If you are new to birth registration, or just new to the conference and would like to attend this great day of training for free, please send an email with your name, facility name & contact information to sally.almond@state.mn.us

NEW STATE REGISTRAR
We are happy to announce Molly Crawford has been hired as the new State Registrar of Vital Records. Molly comes to us from the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) and has been a close partner of OVR for many years, most notably on paternity establishment. She has been a fixture at our Excellence in Birth Registration Conferences and helped educate birth registrars, local child support staff and OVR on the Minnesota Voluntary Recognition of Parentage (ROP) Program. She started here at OVR on February 19.

Changes to the Maternity and Newborn Activity Report
The Maternity and Newborn Activity Report has been updated to include information regarding the Hard Stop process.  Another feature added to the report is a column that includes statewide totals from all birthing hospitals in Minnesota.  These statewide totals can be a valuable tool to compare your facility to others throughout the state.
