Swift County adopts e-cigarettes ordinance
Swift County Board has changed its
tobacco ordinance to include e-cigarettes. Smoking e-cigarettes will now
follow the same regulations in the county as other cigarettes. Click here to learn more.

A conference on Schoolyard Gardens will take place on Friday, March 4. The conference
will provide participants an opportunity to engage with community partners, learn about
agriculture and healthy eating, gain cultural competency
and connect with natural systems. Click here to register.

There have been
substantial updates to the MDH Menthol Flavored Tobacco Products factsheet, which focuses on the impact
of menthol tobacco on youth and African Americans.
We anticipate this will be a useful tool for educating stakeholders. Please
feel free to share with your partners.
The U.S. House of Representatives on Jan. 11 passed the Child Nicotine Poisoning Prevention Act of 2015,
which the Senate passed last year. The bill, which now goes to President Obama
to be signed into law, requires liquid nicotine that is sold to consumers must meet Consumer Product Safety Commission standards for
child-resistant packaging. Liquid nicotine, used in e-cigarettes and similar
devices, currently is available in enticing flavors
that appeal to children. This has led to a rise in
child poisonings, including at least one death. For more information on the risks

According
to the American Public Health Association, a Community Health Worker (CHW) is a
frontline public health worker who has a close understanding of the community
served and is a trusted
liaison and link between health care, social services and the community.
The CDC recommends that CHWs serve on health care teams to help eliminate racial and ethnic disparities
The Minnesota Department of Health Public
Health Practice Section is hosting a webinar to aid local public
health departments in writing goals and objectives for the Local Public Health
Assessment and Planning process deliverables. The concepts in this webinar
would apply to SHIP staff who want to
better align with their Community Health Improvement Plan and Performance Management
system. It will also provide general guidance for including SMART objectives in
plans.

This report documents the outstanding work being done by
grantees and their partners to help build healthier communities across the
state. The efforts cover the state’s Fiscal Year 2014-15.
