Gems

Congratulations to Oxbowl Bend Apartments in Coon Rapids for implementing a smoke-free policy on October 1, 2015. Oxbowl is a subsidized senior property with 52 units. Kudos to ANSR-Ramsey Tobacco Coalition for their assistance with implementation as the policy will be effective April 1, 2016.

On October 6, 2015, Traverse County Government unanimously passed a tobacco-free grounds policy for all of its property. The policy included prohibiting the use of e-cigarettes and a 20-foot setback from building entrances. Kudos to the partnership between TFC Horizon and the policy committee in Traverse County!

On October 12, 2015, the Alexandria City Council voted unanimously to pass a tobacco-free ordinance for all Alexandria parks, which included prohibiting the use of e-cigarettes. Kudos to the partnership between TFC Horizon and the City of Alexandria!

PAL trainings ~ Partnered by SHAPE America, MNSHAPE, Active Schools Minnesota, and MDH ~ January through March 2016

Physical Activity Leader (PAL) trainings provide a professional development opportunity for school and community champions interested in supporting physical education and physical activity both within and outside the school day. The training is based on Comprehensive Schools Physical Activity Program (CSPAP) model utilized by the Active Schools MN Moving Matters Toolkit. Trainings are free and will occur at 4 locations from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. On these days:

Funding for Step It Up! Action Institute to Increase Walking and Walkability ~ Due Jan. 22, 2016

Funding is available for interdisciplinary teams from Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) regions to pursue policy, systems, and environmental (PSE) supports for walking and walkability. Grant funding will allow teams of 4-6 members to attend the Step it Up! Action Institute. This opportunity will provide teams with academic and applied learning techniques to support implementation of the Surgeon Generals’ Call to Action to Promote Walking and Walkable Communities. Funding for School Garden Promotion Grant ~ Jeffers Foundation ~ Due Jan. 4, 2016

The Jeffers Foundation is looking for five schools in Minnesota that have in-place a successful "indoor year-round" school garden program.  Your garden project may be selected for use as an example for other schools, and a video may be produced showing your garden. Five schools or classrooms will be awarded with a $100 grant.  Contact Dar Fosse, School Garden Project director, dfosse@jeffersfoundation.org, to obtain an application.

Ellie Parker and Dr. Peter Dehnel from the Physician Advocacy Network joined Dr. Ed Ehlinger, Commissioner of Health, to discuss the resurgence of nicotine use under a new guise – electronic cigarettes. Register for January Regional Learning Meetings

The January Regional Learning Meetings will provide important information about SHIP 4 Active Living and the opportunity to network and learn from others. The topic of focus will be Active Living, with activities and strategies on how to integrate Active Living within community settings and creative ways to work with partners. 

 LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 

  • Build your capacity to implement SHIP 4 Active Living strategies with take-away resources and planning tools 
  • Share your SHIP Active Living successes and learn from other participants on strategies that work
  • Explore ways to integrate Active Living into your community and engage partners
  • Connect your short-term objectives for Active Living to long-term goals of PSE change 
  • Learn more about Active Living grant opportunities and how to utilize them to enhance your SHIP action plan.
