On
Aug 11, the Renville County Board unanimously voted to adopt
new language and regulations in the Renville County Tobacco Licensing
Ordinance. This is the first time the ordinance has been updated in almost 20
years! The updated ordinance contains current language and definitions with regard to the sale of tobacco and electronic delivery devices. It also
includes higher administrative penalties, retailer education requirements, a
minimum price of $2.10 for cigars, a maximum number of tobacco retail
establishments in the county, restriction of sales near youth-oriented
facilities, and restriction of sales within pharmacies. Kudos to the
Kandiyohi-Renville SHIP staff, the local DFC (RAPAD) staff, Public Health
staff, and community members who spent the past year working on the ordinance!
The
City of Goodridge in Pennington County adopted a Tobacco-Free Outdoor policy on
May 20th at their council meeting, and it was implemented on July 1st.
Three parks are now tobacco free, which includes prohibiting the use of
electronic cigarettes. The signs were up in time for the city’s 4th
of July Goodridge Centennial Celebration. This was a result of a successful
partnership between the City of Goodridge and the Quin TFC staff who met with
the Goodridge city council to provide educational information regarding how
outdoors space policies can benefit and protect youth from secondhand smoke.

Local Foods, Local Places is a federal initiative
that helps communities create walkable, healthy, economically vibrant
neighborhoods through the development of local food systems.
Communities,
including neighborhoods or main street districts, are invited to apply for
technical assistance to build strong local
food systems as part of their emerging economic action plans. Selected communities
in this new round of Local Foods, Local Places will receive direct technical
support from a team of agricultural,
transportation, public health, environmental, and regional economic experts. The assistance
process features a workshop that brings community members together to develop
shared goals and steps to achieve them. The resulting action plans will use
local foods to support healthy families and communities and to drive downtown
and neighborhood revitalization.
A simple application form and
guidelines for a letter of interest are available. Click
