The Center for Public Health
Systems Science is pleased to release its latest product from the Advancing
Science and Policy in the Retail Environment (ASPiRE) project. The report
details experiences from the 2014 pilot of the Standardized Tobacco Assessments
for Retail Settings (STARS) tool in four states: Indiana, Oregon, Texas, and
Vermont. Though STARS was released only one year ago, communities in at least
half of the 50 states are now using the assessment tool to build awareness,
compare tobacco's presence across neighborhoods, and gather evidence to support
local and state tobacco control policies. To read the report, click here.
Will
spotlight historical information and new trends related to place-based health
equity measures to reduce tobacco use, increase cancer screening opportunities
and highlight case studies that address health equity. There is no cost to
attend, but pre-registration is required. More information here.

The
Minnesota Department of Health is using the State Fair as a way to spark a
conversation about healthy communities and what people can do to create health
in their community.
MDH’s booth
at the State Fair, which takes place Aug. 27-Sept. 7, will feature the theme
“Picture a healthier community.” The booth is located in the Education
Building.
The goal is help
build more understanding on how good health is created long before we go to the
doctor’s office. It’s created where we live, work, learn and play.
MDH will be
using social media to help generate conversation, plus encourage people to stop
by the booth during the fair. Visitors will be encouraged to take a photo in
front of a large photo frame, with a pre-printed sign or white board with a
short message that shows one change that would support better health in their
community.
The campaign
is also an opportunity for you to start the conversation on social media about
what work you’ve done locally to support healthier communities. Watch for posts
on MDH’s social media accounts on Twitter and Facebook starting next week.
If you’re at
the State Fair, stop by and say hello!

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) and the American Heart Association (AHA) are collaborating to accelerate the
development of a national framework to improve Native American nutrition. This
announcement follows the launch in March of Seeds of Native Health, the Minnesota
tribe's initiative to improve Native American nutrition, and the recent release
of Feeding Ourselves, a new report
detailing the grave dietary crisis facing many Native American communities
Through Voices for Healthy Kids, a joint
initiative of the American Heart Association and the Robert Wood Johnson
Foundation, communities across the country are mobilizing to increase access to
healthy foods and safe places to be active. The two organizations recently
commissioned Feeding Ourselves, a comprehensive report that examines the
barriers to food access and their link to health disparities in Indian Country.
The report found that Native Americans are twice as likely as the rest of the
U.S. population to experience nutrition-related health problems.
