Gems

June 22, the Mountain Lake City Council unanimously passed a Tobacco-free Park Policy, which includes prohibiting the use of e-cigarettes, for their city parks, trails, beaches, recreational areas, and community gathering areas. Congratulations to Mt. Lake for being one of the now growing number of communities in Cottonwood County to pass a tobacco-free park policy. The policy will be effective on August 1, 2015. Kudos to Des Moines Valley Public Health TFC for assisting Mt. Lake in the policy development process and working with city officials to communicate the new tobacco policy.

May 4, the Little Falls City Council unanimously passed a Tobacco-free Park Policy thanks to the hard work done by Morrison County. The new policy includes prohibiting the use of e-cigarettes, for all their city park.

Students from the Area Learning Center (ALC) in Fergus Falls completed a school health investigation, registered on the Fuel Up to Play 60 website, surveyed their peers, attended school wellness committee meetings to share their findings, lobbied for a salad bar, created a school store to sell healthy snacks and beverages, and learned how to use yoga to increase their fitness level. Through this process, the students were empowered to influence their school environment, and became leaders in regards to school wellness. Great work PartnerSHIP 4 Health!

Available for Comment ~ Draft Safe Routes to School Strategic Plan

Check out the draft SRTS strategic plan (PDF) and take a survey to weigh in on SRTS program priorities.

How did it come about? Beginning in the fall of 2014, MnDOT convened a diverse group of stakeholders from agencies and organizations around the state to develop a Minnesota SRTS Strategic Plan. Participants included representatives from Minnesota State departments of health, transportation, and education; city and county government; regional development commissions; public safety; traffic safety; schools and school districts; non-profits; and health organizations. Working through four interactive workshops and a series of online surveys between November 2014 and February 2015, the strategic planning participants developed a vision and value statements for the state SRTS program, and 5-year goals, strategies, and action steps. The plan includes approaches to public outreach, marketing, and education for SRTS initiatives throughout the state of Minnesota, as well as strategies for developing and implementing SRTS plans and programs.
