Carver County is adding more
tobacco free open spaces. Farmer’s Markets in the cities of Carver and Chaska,
and at the Carver County Government Center, have partnered with Public Health
to designate their events as tobacco free. In addition, Public Health has
partnered with At The Farm, an organic produce and gardening market, and The
Mustard Seed, a greenhouse and landscape business, to enhance their tobacco
free policies to include all outdoor space on their properties. The city of
Watertown has designated its community garden as tobacco free. Each partner who
provided Carver County with their tobacco free policy were given yard signs
with a “We Share Our Air – Thank you for not using tobacco” message and a
garden image.
Do you have a resource or success story (“gem”) to share for a future issue? Submissions for each week’s Thursday publication are due by noon every Tuesday to Health.MakingitBetter@state.mn.us or community specialists for:
The job posting to
fill the Nutrition Coordinator position in the Office of Statewide Health
Improvement Initiatives (OSHII) at the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) is
open for all qualified job seekers. The posting is open through midnight on June 22.
Announcing that the Tobacco Prevention and Control Unit
will be extending the current Tobacco-Free Communities (TFC) grants by nine
months to have a new end date of October 31, 2016 (originally January 31,
2016). This grant extension applies to all nine local TFC grantees and the two
urban American Indian grantees. The tobacco technical assistance providers will
continue to provide TA and training during this time. Over the next year, MDH
will be conducting a statewide tobacco prevention and control community input
process, which will help determine strategic objectives for MDH’s tobacco
control initiatives, including the next round of TFC grants. We expect a new
TFC grant cycle to begin November 1, 2016 through a new competitive Request for
Proposals. This new TFC grant cycle start date will allow us to align TFC and
SHIP grant years (November 1 – October 31) and hopefully help streamline grant
processes for OSHII and potential grantees.
