Gems

Rivervine Apartments are now smoke-free since June 1! This is great thanks to Mayberry Realty, located in St. James, which owns Rivervine Apartments, a 16 unit apartment complex in the city of Jackson. The smoke-free policy includes prohibiting the use of e-cigarettes and cigarettes throughout the entire apartment complex and discourages tenants from smoking near entrances. The Des Moines Valley Public Health TFC staff assisted Mayberry Realty in the policy development process to support this smoke-free policy. Kudos to Rivervine for being one of the now many apartment complexes in Jackson and Jackson County to pass a smoke-free policy.

Below is a letter from the Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf (MSAD)/Minnesota State Academy for the Blind (MSAB) sent Rice County Public Health. The schools have participated in MSAD Active Classroom: UMN, MSAD Classroom Activity Kits, MSAD Making Healthy Snacks in School, MSAB/MSAD Drums Alive, MSAB Dwarf Fruit Trees, MSAB Making Healthy Snacks in School, MSAD EDGE, MSAD Jump Ropes, and MSAB Fit.

"Just wanted to let you know how excited my students have been about using the equipment we received from the grant! They ask me to work-out every day. We try to fit in at least a 10 minute work-out daily. We have been doing circuits with the equipment. We’ve been able to bring the equipment outdoors a couple of times to enjoy the weather while working out. We are excited to use the equipment for summer school and then daily in our class for the 2015-2016 school year.

Thanks again, we greatly appreciate it that we are able to incorporate fitness into our schedules while having a little fun doing it."

Pew Survey Shows Strong Support for School Nutrition Standards in Minnesota

School may be out for the year but a new survey shows strong statewide support for making sure healthy food remains in the lunch room next year and beyond.

More than eight out of 10 voters (82 percent) and three out of four public school parents (76 percent) in Minnesota support requiring public schools to meet the national nutrition standards for school meals, according to a new survey conducted by The Pew Charitable Trusts and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The majority of voters and public school parents also think schools should be required to serve nutritious food options such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Read the news release about the results in Minnesota. Learn more about the polling project.

Resource ~ Active Transportation Equity: A Scan of Existing Master Plans ~ Advocacy Advance

Active Transportation Equity: A Scan of Existing Master Plans examines 38 current bicycle and pedestrian master plans to assess the definition and inclusion of equity as a stated goal or outcome. Equity within the bicycling and walking movement tends to focus on recognizing and reacting to the underrepresentation of youth, women, and people of color in advocacy efforts and local transportation decisions. As active transportation advocates, planners, and engineers move forward on planning efforts, this resource is intended to serve as a reference with examples of approaches they can learn from and build upon.

Webinar ~ When Safe Routes to School Meets Violence Prevention ~ Safe Routes to School National Partnership ~ June 25, 12pm

Safe Routes to School isn’t just about protecting children who are walking or bicycling from the threats posed by vehicles.  In some communities, violence and crime are great dangers to children and can be barriers to walking, bicycling, and being active. Hear from speakers about the impacts of violence on youth and communities, strategies to make routes to school safe from violence and crime, and how we can work collaboratively to create communities where kids can be active and safe.
