Cloudy with a threat of rain couldn't keep cyclists away from
the first annual Bike Opener at Heartland Park in Park Rapids last Saturday,
May 16. Over 300 came to see the ribbon cutting for the new bridge over the
Fish Hook River and ride the Heartland Trail in celebration of what they hope will be an annual event much like other season
openers across the state.
The
initial idea for 'a celebration of all things bike' in Park
Rapids was sparked early in 2014 and planning began in January of 2015, as a
collaboration between the Park Rapids Area Chamber, North Country Health
Alliance-SHIP, Northwest Composite Mountain Bike Team, Saint Joseph's Area
Health Services, Hubbard United Methodist Church Bike Group, and Itascatur
outdoor activity club.
Congratulations to the Minnesota Child Care Services, Inc located in Minneapolis for adopting a tobacco-free grounds policy, which prohibits the use of tobacco products, smoking, and use of electronic cigarettes. Kudos to WellShare International’s East African Smoke Free Program for working closely with the Minnesota Child Care Services, Inc to educate management about secondhand smoke, asthma, cigarettes, and hookah. The policy is instrumental in protecting the health, safety, and welfare of all employees, members, visitors, and especially children.

programs can help people walk more, and providing practical strategies for
starting and maintaining walking programs in malls or other venues in areas
where a mall is not available. The information in the Guide is based on a

laws in many states that protect non-smokers from secondhand smoke, exposure

I wanted to take a few minutes to provide a report on the final outcome for the Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP) in the 2015 legislative session.
I’m pleased that late last week Governor Dayton signed the Omnibus Health and Human Services bill, which includes $35 million for SHIP. We’re grateful for the support from the Commissioner of Health, the Governor and the legislature.
Special thanks to you all for helping to make the strong case for SHIP funding. Your assistance during the session – whether it was by providing information on your current SHIP work, testifying at a hearing or other support you were able to provide – is truly appreciated.
The final bill maintains $35 million in SHIP funding, less a one-time appropriation of $200,000 for a menthol cigarette intervention grant and $371,000 for the biennium to cover the costs of health projected spending and outcome reports, which were proposed to increase accountability for SHIP. The bill also includes language that expands evidence-based strategies to address dementia prevention through policy, systems and environmental change.
Now that the funding picture for SHIP is clear, we are making final preparations for the next SHIP grant application process. We are hoping to release the application by mid-June.
Thanks again for your support!

Are you working with a health care partner who is actively addressing
hypertension? You may want to make them aware of the following
opportunity:
Beginning today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is
accepting applications from health care providers to enroll in the Million
Hearts® CVD Risk Reduction initiative. Health care providers
who participate in the model will work with Medicare beneficiaries to determine
their individual risk for a heart attack or stroke in the next 10 years. Then,
providers will work with patients to identify the best approach to reduce their
individual risk —for example, stopping smoking, reducing blood pressure, or
taking cholesterol-lowering drugs or aspirin—and show them the benefits of each
approach. Each patient will get a personalized risk modification plan
that will target their specific risk factors. Providers will be paid for
reducing the absolute risk for heart disease or stroke among their high-risk
patients.
For more information on how to apply and on the Million Hearts®
Cardiovascular Disease Risk Reduction Initiative, visit their website.
