Congrats to the City of Saint Paul for
voting unanimously April 22 to adopt an ordinance that places stronger
penalties on tobacco vendors whose license has been revoked. This ordinance
gives the City of Saint Paul a tool to help address businesses that have
violated city code repeatedly. Kudos to ANSR-Ramsey Tobacco Coalition for
working closely with the City of Saint Paul, local neighborhood groups, and
Aurora-St. Anthony Neighborhood Development Corporation to raise awareness of
this issue and the ordinance. What an innovative approach to increase the sense
of security and safety in Saint Paul neighborhoods!

children with food allergies safely and healthfully can be a challenge. CDC has developed the Tool Kit for
Managing Food Allergies in Schools to help schools in implementing the Voluntary
Guidelines for Managing Food Allergies in School and Early Care and Education
Programs. The easy-to-use tool kit includes tip sheets, training
presentations, and podcasts highlighting resources and action steps for state
education and health agencies, schools and school districts, early care and
education programs, and parents.
The Aetna Foundation’s Local Roots grant program is funding
the creation and expansion of community gardens, urban farms and farmers
markets in underserved, low-income and minority communities, with a goal of
making fresh fruits and vegetables locally available, accessible and
affordable.
Funding guidelines: $25,000 - $50,000 for 12-24 months
Eligibility: Nonprofit [501(c)(3)] organizations and state
or local government agencies

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
has published CDC Winnable Battles 2010-2015, Progress Report 2014.
The new report uses recent data from CDC surveillance systems to track progress
in seven public health areas, including tobacco. Note pages 4&5 for
tobacco-related content.
The Center for the Study of Tobacco and Society
explores the historical and contemporary aspects of tobacco in society through
an interdisciplinary approach. The Center’s tobacco archive is a unique socio-cultural
resource that documents the tobacco issue from all vantage points, from public
health issues to anti-smoking strategies, as well as the social, agricultural,

First Nations is currently accepting proposals for programs and/or projects that focus on strengthening Native food systems and improving the health and nutrition of Native people and communities. Desired programs and/or projects will noticeably improve a tribe or Native organization’s effort to increase access to traditional, fresh and healthy foods and increase access to nutrition-related programs aimed at improving the overall nutrition and health of Native people and communities. Moreover, selected proposals will increase awareness of and involvement with where the tribe and/or communities’ food comes from, expand knowledge of the linkages of food to Native cultures, and/or contribute to tribal economic growth and development with income from entrepreneurially-related food ventures.
