Minnesota Department of Education Seeks Sponsors for 2015 Summer Food Service Program

Many Minnesota families rely on the free or reduced-price meals their children get at school. When school is out, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) bridges the “nutrition gap.” The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) is looking for organizations to sponsor the 2015 SFSP and provide free meals to Minnesota children 18 and under during the summer when school is out. There are many underserved areas in need of a sponsor to operate a summer feeding site, especially in greater Minnesota. Sponsors receive training, technical assistance and reimbursement for providing meals to children 18 and under in areas of economic need. Read news release.


School Desegregation and Integration Rules -- Requests for Comments Open February 9 through April 10, 2015 

The formal rulemaking process for the school desegregation and integration rulemaking proceeding has begun. The Request for Comments was published in the State Register on Monday, February 9, 2015. The Minnesota Department of Education will accept comments on the proposed rule until April 10, 2015. For a copy of the proposed rules and information about how to submit a comment, please review the Request for Comments posted on the Minnesota Department of Education’s rulemaking web page.


Essentials of Summer and At-Risk Afterschool Meals for Youth

An informational session will be held from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24. Presentations will cover the Summer Food Service Program, Seamless Summer Option and the At-Risk Snack and Meal Programs. Minnesota Department of Education, Conference Center B, Room CC-15, 1500 Highway 36 West in Roseville. Register online for the session.


Summer Food Service Program Basics Workshops Scheduled for April

Choose a workshop location nearest to you: Roseville, River Falls, Fergus Falls and New Ulm. Summer Food Service Program Refresher Workshops will be held in multiple locations as well. Teacher Development and Evaluation Webinar Series

Due to the popularity of the first webinar series, the Minnesota Department of Education is repeating these sessions in March and April. The webinars address components of the Teacher Development and Evaluation (TDE) statute, and provide information, strategies and tools for TDE implementation and refinement. They are designed for school leaders, leadership teams and school staff involved with implementation of the Teacher Development and Evaluation statute. Executive Functioning and Student Achievement Workshop: February 27

Students who struggle with Executive Functioning (EF) may have difficulty with organizational skills, planning, time management and execution. The neuroscience of EF and practical tools to help young thinkers strengthen their EF muscles will be examined in this workshop. The Minnesota Association of Administrators of State & Federal Education Programs (MAASFEP) conference includes sessions for paraprofessionals, teachers and administrators of state and federal education programs to learn effective, research-based strategies to meet the needs of all learners, especially those who are not on track to be proficient in core subjects. Wander Minnesota: Modern Spirit: The Art of George Morrison

The Minnesota History Center is opening a new exhibit on Saturday, February 14 that will run through April 26. George Morrison was a 20th-century artist born in Minnesota, in an Indian fishing village near Lake Superior. He spoke only Ojibwe until he was six and began attending school. Morrison is widely considered to be the founder of Native modernism, and he used the natural world as inspiration for his paintings, sculptures, totems, and collages.
